In the two last experiments, I put a lamp into the room, over night, in hopes of making the air warmer than the weights, but without effect, as the heat of the weights exceeded that of the air more in these two experiments than in the former. On the evening of October 17, the weights being placed in the midway position, lamps were put under them, in order to warm them; the door was then shut, and the lamps suffered to burn out. The next morning it was found, on moving the weights to the negative position, that they were 7.5 warmer than the air near the case. After they had continued an hour in that position, they were found to have cooled 1.5, so as to be only 6 warmer than the air. They were then moved to the positive position; and in both positions the arm was drawn aside about four divisions more, after the weights had remained an hour in that position, than it was at first. And as the Bub ble grew thinner by the continual subsiding of the Water, these Rings dilated flowly and overspread the whole Bubble, descending in order to the bottom of it, where they vanilh d successively. In the mean while, after all the Colours were emerged at the top, there grew in thecenter of the Rings a small round black Spot, like that in the first observation, which continually dilated it self till it became sometimes more than or of an Inch in breadth before the Bubble broke. At first I thought there had been no Light reflected from.the Water in that place, but observing it more curiously, I saw within it several smaller round Spots, which appeared much blacker and darker than the rest, whereby I knew that there was some Reflexion at the other places which were not so dark as those Spots. And by farther Tryal I found that I could fee the Images, of some things (as of a Candle or the Sun) very faintly reflected, not only from the great black Spot, but also from the little darker Spots which were within it. Besides the aforesaid colour d Rings there would often appear small Spots of Colours, ascending and descending up and down the sides of the Bubble, by reason of some Inequalities in the subsiding of the Water. And sometimes small black Spots generated at the fides would ascend ascend up to the larger black Spot at the top of the Bubble, and unite with it, Obs. 18. Item Description: Digireads.com, United States, 2011. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 226 x 150 mm. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) is without a doubt one of the most well-known and influential scientists in history; he made incalculable contributions to the fields of physics, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and theology. From 1670 to 1672, Newton lectured on optics while developing his theory of color. This led to his invention of the refracting telescope in 1672, which would correct chromatic aberration in the traditional refracting telescope, and so impressed the Royal Society that they encouraged him to publish his work. Opticks was Newton s second major contribution in this field, and offered new insights into the nature of color, light, and the phenomena of diffraction. The book also includes Newton s Queries, which address a wide range of physical phenomena, include the nature and transmission of heat, the possible cause of gravity, electrical phenomena, chemical action, and ethics of both science and human conduct.
