Illustrated with 7 original drawings by Manuel Neri, and 4 Poems by Pablo Neruda calligraphed by Thomas Ingmire. Large folio, 470 x 349 mm, bound in full inlaid morocco in a linen-covered clamshell box by Daniel Kelm. Portola Valley, California 2004. A truly magnificent manuscript created to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Pablo Neruda. The work is a collaboration between the artist Manuel Neri, the calligrapher Thomas Ingmire, and the binder Daniel Kelm. This is one from a collection of sixteen such works exhibited at the Stanford University Libraries in 2012. Item Description: Edicion de la Sociedad de Arte Contemporaneo, Santiago de Chile, 1969. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. First edition (limited roman-numerallede issue, 1/35) of one of Neruda's major late works, a sort of companion volume to his 1948 masterpiece, Canto general -- theya re his only two book-length poems, and the present text engages the experience of human suffering in the Twentieth Century as the previous had treated the tortured history of Latin America from its founding into the present. This copy is extraordinary: it is inscribed by Neruda to Chilean president Salvador Allende, with a long, warm dedication (dated 1970), and with a full-page poem in Neruda's hand a few pages later. In 1969, as Neruda, a former senator, was finishing the present text he was nominated as presidential candidate for the Communist Party. After some actuve early campaigning, he decided to bow out of the race and lend his support to fellow senator and friend, Salvador Allende, the Socialist Party candidate, and a man of clear and human values whose candidacy was viewed with trepidation by the Chilean ruling class. Allende was, of course, murdered three years later (1973) in a coup led by the commander in chief of the Chilean Army, Augusto Pinochet Ugarte under the auspices of the CIA and the British secret service, refusing the offer of safe transit if he would step down voluntarily and instead delivering an impassioned speech to the people of Chile urging them not to give up hope nor abandon their struggle prior to his death. Neruda would die only a few days later, many have long contended as a result of poisoning by the Pinochet regime, who feared that in exile he would circulate details of their actions in Chile. Although a recent (2013) long-term investigation seems to have quelled that accusation, there are still many who doubt the finding. Called "simply the greatest poet of the Twentieth Century, in any language," by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This is one of the most remarkable association copies of any work of Latin American literature that we have ever encountered. Bookseller Inventory # D11072

Item Description: Ediciones de Libreria Neira, Santiago de Chile, 1948. First edition. The first edition of Neruda's masterpiece, later incorporated into Canto General. One of 500 copies numbered in Arabic, an additional 20 numbered in Roman were not for sale. Folio, 25 x 38 cm. 48 pages, 7 full page woodcuts by José Venturelli. Neruda first visited Machu Picchu in 1943, however he did not begin writing the poem until 1945. The French writer Roger Caillois visited him while he was composing it, and began to publish his translations in January, 1946, but the first partial publication in Spanish did not occur until July 1946. This first edition in book form was published by a Santiago bookstore, a courageous effort at a time when Neruda was in hiding from the police in a friend's basement. Original wrappers, a little tanned and with some small areas of paper restoration to the edges; a very good copy of a book scarce in commerce. Becco 84; Loyola 292 (misdated as 1947). Illustrated by Jose Venturelli with seven full-page woodcuts, the upper cover repeating the first illustration. In Very Good condition overall with some age toning to the wrappers and repairs to the inner hinges, otherwise a very tidy example of this fragile and important work by the Nobel-prize winning author. "The Heights of Macchu Picchu is the finest and most famous of Neruda's longer poems and provides the key to his earlier work. It was inspired by his journey to Macchu Picchu, the Peruvian Inca city high in the Andes. Neruda's journey takes on all the symbolic qualities of a personal "venture into the interior" as the poem progresses, exploring both the roots of the poet's identity and the history of Latin America." (From the introduction to the Nathaniel Tarn translation in 1966). Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # 1558
