Illustrated with 7 original drawings by Manuel Neri, and 4 Poems by Pablo Neruda calligraphed by Thomas Ingmire. Large folio, 470 x 349 mm, bound in full inlaid morocco in a linen-covered clamshell box by Daniel Kelm. Portola Valley, California 2004. A truly magnificent manuscript created to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Pablo Neruda. The work is a collaboration between the artist Manuel Neri, the calligrapher Thomas Ingmire, and the binder Daniel Kelm. This is one from a collection of sixteen such works exhibited at the Stanford University Libraries in 2012. The truly exquisite calligraphy is the work of Thomas Ingmire, one of the world's foremost calligraphers. Item Description: Ediciones de Libreria Neira, (1948)., Santiago de Chile:, 1948. First edition. The first edition of Neruda's masterpiece, later incorporated into Canto General. One of 500 copies numbered in Arabic, an additional 20 numbered in Roman were not for sale. Folio, 25 x 38 cm. 48 pages, 7 full page woodcuts by José Venturelli. Neruda first visited Machu Picchu in 1943, however he did not begin writing the poem until 1945. The French writer Roger Caillois visited him while he was composing it, and began to publish his translations in January, 1946, but the first partial publication in Spanish did not occur until July 1946. This first edition in book form was published by a Santiago bookstore, a courageous effort at a time when Neruda was in hiding from the police in a friend's basement. Original wrappers, a little tanned and with some small areas of paper restoration to the edges; a very good copy of a book rare in commerce. Becco 84; Loyola 292 (misdated as 1947). First edition. Item Description: Ediciones "España Popular" [1941], [No place], 1941. 8vo, original stapled self-wrappers, photographic portrait of Neruda on the front wrapper An old vertical fold, a few soft corner creases, a few nicks and closed edgetears in the front wrapper, acidic paper somewhat brittle from age, but a good copy of this fragile 7-page leaflet. Not in Becco First edition of this poem written by Neruda to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the (temporary) turning back of the Nationalist army at the gates of Madrid and the twenty-fourth anniversary of the Soviet Union. Presentation copy, bearing Neruda’s 3-line inscription, signed by him, on the front wrapper: Diómedes, Aqui es el substituto / con abrazo de Pablo Neruda." Written at the same time as Neruda’s "Un nuevo canto de amor a Stalingrado [A Love Song to Stalingrad]", the present "Oda" celebrates the courage of the Russian people in their battle against Nazi Germany, a point that is amplified by the legend on the back wrapper: "Ayudar a la URSS e Inglaterra es defender América [Helping the USSR and England is to defend America]". Neruda, whose anti-fascist views were well known, had become a member of the Committee to Aid Russia at War in 1941, and had recited his "Song to Stalingrad" at the Teatro del Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas" on September 30, 1941. "Song to Stalingrad" was printed and posted on walls all over Mexico City. – Adam Feinstein, Pablo Neruda: A Passion for Life (Bloomsbury, 2004), p. 160. Bookseller Inventory # 21975

Item Description: Editorial Nascimento, Santiago de Chile, 1926. First edition of Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda's only novel. Influenced by the work of Rimbaud and Rilke, both of whom Neruda had translated into Spanish, this dreamlike revenge fantasy has an unapologetically poetic quality: in his prologue, Neruda admits: "Yo tengo un concepto dramático de la vida, y romántico; no me corresponde lo que no llega profundamente a mi sensibilidad." While El Habitante y Su Esperanza marked the end, rather than the beginning, of Neruda's career as a writer of fiction, it remains a significant early example of the experimental Latin American novel. Text in Spanish. This copy is inscribed by Neruda to American book dealer Maury Austin Bromsen, who was studying at the University of Chile in the year of presentation. No signed or inscribed first edition copies appear in the auction record: a genuinely scarce title inscribed by Neruda. Small octavo, cream-colored wraps printed in red and green. Wraps soiled with small stain to head of spine, title underlined in blue ink on the front panel, evidence of early repairs to edges and hinges. Bookseller Inventory # 100415

Item Description: Ediciones Ercilla, Santiago de Chile, 1937. Book Condition: Good. First edition. A worn, but complete copy of this scarce publication by one of Latin America's most prominent poets. Original self wrappers printed in red, gray and yellow, spine cracked and professionally reattached (lacking a small chip), wrappers soiled, and a dampstain affects the top edge of leaves throughout. Rare in the original wraps, most first edition copies have been rebound. Posted in Spain as a diplomat during the Spanish Civil War, Neruda became an ardent communist. This collection of left-leaning political poems is his reaction against Franco, exposing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and its fascist regime. Just two thousand copies of this original edition were produced, each containing 16 black and white photographic reproductions, as here. Good. Bookseller Inventory # 1057
