From the Arc we drove to the Trocadero Palace, and from its balconies looked out over the terraced gardens and the Seine upon the incompleted buildings of the Exposition. The others of our party were soon following our example, and, although we remained in Paris but a week, it is safe to say that we saw much more of the city than many Americans who have tarried there for a much longer period. To tell of all the incidents, or half of them, that made up our experiences in Paris, would require a substantial volume in itself, and I am not sure but it would make exceedingly interesting reading. Those who have visited Paris can doubtless imagine how much there would be for twenty-five able-bodied, fun-loving, muchtraveled young Americans to see and to do, and we were seeing and doing through every available hour of our time. The morning before our game, President Spalding and Manager Lynch, in a personal call, extended to President Carnot an invitation to attend our exhibition, and the next morning received in reply the following letter from Gen. Brugere, which, translated, reads thus: -- Pres1dence De La Republ1c, Paris, March 7th. Sir: --I have the honor to inform you that the President of the Republic is warmly appreciative of the invitation extended to him to attend the baseball match at the Pare Aristotique. He, however, regrets that because of his numerous occupations he will be unable to be present, as he attaches much interest to the development of physical exercise in the education of our youths. He will, however, be represented by the officers of his military staff. Accept, sir, every assurance of my distinguished consideration. Gkneral Brugere, General of the Brigade, Secretary-General to . Item Description: Hubbard Brothers, Publishers, Philadelphia, 1889. Hardcover. First edition. Thick small quarto. Decorated brown cloth lettered and illustrated in gilt and black. 711pp., illustrated, four color chromolithograph plates. Hinges tender, some streaking to the spine, a sound good or better copy, with the plates nice and clean. Although the book covers most popular field sports of the era, it is overwhelmingly devoted to baseball, and includes profiles of all the current professional teams, college baseball, and with what would, in another context, be a book-long account of the 1888-9 world barnstorming tour between the Chicago Baseball Club and an opposing all-star squad. Three of the four color illustrations are of baseball (including the wonderful frontispiece view of a baseball game outside London's Crystal Palace), the fourth is of a cricket match. Many black and white illustrations of individual baseball players, as well as of teams and important games. A nice, sound copy of a keystone title for any serious baseball collection. Although the book covers most popular field sports of the era, it is overwhelmingly devoted to baseball, and includes profiles of all the current professional teams, college baseball, and with what would in another context be a book-long account of the 1888-9 world barnstorming tour between the Chicago Baseball Club and an opposing all-star squad. Three of the four color illustrations are of baseball, including the wonderful frontispiece view of a baseball game outside London's Crystal Palace, the fourth is of a cricket match. Many black and white illustrations of individual baseball players, as well as of teams and important games. A beautiful copy of a keystone title for any serious baseball collection.
