Book Description: Godbid & J. Playford, for Robert Scott, London, 1681. FIRST EDITION. 8 parts in 2 volumes. 4to I: [xxiv], 288; [xii], 104; [ii], 161, [1] pp. (some mispagination at pp. 175-176 and 274-275); II: [iv], 143, [1], 384; [iv], 56, 32 pp. I: With two titles (one engraved and one in red and black), separate titles and prefaces to each section, including Flamsteed’s Doctrine of the sphere, dated 1680. With 42 plates (12 folding) and 2 complete volvelles, numerous text illustration (many nearly full page). Errata laid in at p. 185. II: With separate title and 61 maps on 52 sheets, some folding. Contemporary calf, rebacked in a contemporary style; interior with some soiling and toning, edges lightly browned. Generally, a superb copy. With numerous ownership annotations, including a contemporary owner (A. Taylor?), who has provided a detailed demographic calculation documenting the number of houses and inhabitants in each of the English counties. Other ownership signatures of Ralph Snowdon, 1707, John Tomlinson, 1739, Francis H. Atkins, 1860, and the stamp of W. Bayly, possibly the English astronomer (1737-1810) who accompanied William Wales as astronomer on Cook’s voyages. First edition of this extraordinary work, issued for the Royal Mathematical School within Christ’s Hospital, which was founded in 1673 by Samuel Pepys together with Moore. The first section by Moore covers arithmetic and algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and cosmology, with six finely engraved star charts probably by Flamsteed (whose own star atlas was not published until 1729). The chapter on navigation was partially supplied by his pupil Perkins after Moore’s untimely death, along with the books of Euclid’s Elements. The section on the Doctrine of the sphere has a title page dated 1680. Flamsteed’s illustrates his important lunar theory and solar tables as well as his introduction to his method of calculating parallaxes, invented in 1676. Halley contributed A new geography in Volume II with maps to each country, and tables of longitude and latitude. Included is a large section on astronomical tables, with tables of logarithms, natural and artificial sines and tangents, all with instructions on their use.The engravings in this work are particularly outstanding, depicting numerous astronomical and navigational instruments. Many of the fifty plates contain two or more maps. Of special interest are those of the Western Hemisphere, New England, Virginia, Florida, New Mexico, New Spain (Mexico), Brazil, Chili, Peru, and much more.Moore (1617-79) had a remarkable career, and was one of the first to make a substantial fortune from the practice of mathematics. Influenced bv Oughtred, he became mathematics teacher to the Duke of York, a major contributor to the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, and a patron of John Flamsteed, to whom he provided instruments (sextant and clocks) to carry out his astronomical observations on longitude. In addition, Moore was a noted surveyor who took part in the survey of London after the Great Fire. He was appointed Surveyor of Ordnance in 1669, and thereafter became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and later its vice-president. His main interest was in the development of the mathematical and related sciences, and the Tower of London, where he lived, became the center of scientific observation in the city of London. Moore was a mentor to many future scientists, especially the young John Flamsteed and Edmund Halley, whom he helped with books and instruments. Bookseller Inventory # 14467

Book Description: Mount Vernon, New York William Edwin Rudge 1925, 1925. Octavo. 51pp. One of 500 copies. A one-act play, set in Medieval Spain, by the English poet and dramatist T. Sturge Moore. Designed by Bruce Rogers and bound in full golden morocco by Peter Franck, who at one time executed tooled leather bindings for the Roycroft Shop, where he worked alongside Dard Hunter, Louis Kinder, and Sterling Lord. Franck later went to work for Rudge before opening his own bindery in Connecticut, where he bound a number of Dard Hunter's Mountain House Press books. This binding features a center gilt-tooled design to both boards, fashioned of printers' ornaments that were probably designed by Rogers. Some of the ornaments are repeated in a gilt border to the outer edges of the boards, on the turn-ins, and on the spine, which is in five compartments with gilt lettering to the center compartment. Franck's imprint appears in gilt at the bottom of the spine and on the rear turn-in, which also bears the publisher's imprint. Endpapers marbled. Some uniform toning to spine, else fine. T.e.g. Housed in a fleece-lined morocco and decorated-paper folding case, lettered in gilt on the spine. Case shows some wear, with a two-inch split to the bottom hinge as well as some chipping and rubbing to the spine and corners. Bookseller Inventory # 21130

Book Description: Moore's letter and the directions on separate Hoglands letterheads the letter dated 29 March and the directions undated. Copies of four Juda letters dated 13 May 1965 23 March and 3 April 1973 and 29 August 1974, 1973. ONE: Typed Letter Signed ('Henry') from Moore to Juda ('Dear Hans'). On letterhead of Hoglands, Perry Green, Much Hadham, Herts. 29 March 1973. 1p., 12mo. He thanks Juda for telling him about 'the ART AUCTION in aid of "Save the Children Fund." | I do know about it as some years ago I gave a sculpture, and then a lithograph for this fund.' Moore has given so much work 'for these worthy causes [.] that the Inland Revenue people, realising that they were losing a lot of tax through my work not being sold in the normal way, made a ruling, (which I think applies only to me), that I can only give work "to the Tate Gallery, or any other public gallery, or for a public monument of national importance." I was relieved when they made this ruling, it solved many problems for me.' He concludes with best wishes to Juda and his wife the photograph Elspeth Juda. TWO: Autograph driving directions from Hoglands to Hoddesdon, drawn in blue ink by Moore. On Hoglands letterhead. 1p., 12mo. Representing, along the right-hand margin, a snaking road route up from Hoglands, in the bottom right-hand corner, joining the A10 which is drawn vertically across the page below the letterhead, to Hoddesdon in the top left-hand corner, from which an arrow points leftwards off the page. THREE: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 13 May 1965. 1p., 8vo. Attached to Item Two. He thanks Moore for a 'wonderful afternoon'. 'Last night at Victor's Retrospective Exhibition - impressive and beautifully staged - we looked at our favourite Moores; the knife-edged two-piece which was bought by the Tate in 1963 appealed to Elspeth, who remembers that you showed us part of this knife-edged piece last Tuesday; the other part you looked for was not there.' He concludes by askigng whether there is 'a possibility of your letting us have a similar piece as the one at the Tate?' FOUR: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 23 March 1973. 1p., 8vo. The letter to which ONE replies. He realises that 'the flood of begging letters for worthy causes' Moore receives 'must increase daily', but is writing on behalf of his 'dear and old friend' Mrs Lola Hahn-Warburg, who is in charge of the Save the Children Fund art auction. 'If you could see your way to part with a little sketch or drawing, it would certainly be the highlight of the Auction.' FIVE: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 3 April 1973. 1p., 8vo. Moore's letter 'makes it very clear that you cannot possibly be as generous as you would like to be'. SIX: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 29 August 1974. 1p., 8vo. He is approaching the age of seventy ('I think you might still remember the event.'). 'I have given myself one gift: to thank you personally for the enlightenment you have given for all those years. | The more my eyesight deteriorates, the more vision there seems to be and "to see things" is a quality which you have given not only to me but to many thousands if not millions of people.' He describes three of his own sculptures which he is sending Moore under separate cover, one of which 'is, of course, based on an objet trouve which I only slightly manipulated before it was cast at the Central School of Art and Design (in which I still take a very active interest as you know). [.] To send you these three items is my only birthday present. What you should not do is to clutter up further your huge collection of similar if not more congenial items.'. Book Description: Fluxus, New York, 1970. Tabloid Format Wrappers. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Elephant Folio. One 22 x 34" sheet printed offset recto and verso, neatly folded in eighths to make 4pp, 123 b&w illustrations + one 20 x 6" sheet printed offset recto and verso, neatly folded in half, no illustrations, as issued. Despite being labeled "No. 8" on the cover, this is actually the ninth installment of noted irregular Fluxus periodical "V Tre". It takes the form of a huge two-sided poster reproducing Peter Moore's photographic documentation of New York Flux activities between New Year's eve 1969 and May 1970 - primarily the numerous events and performances of works by John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged in the Big Apple that spring. The usual suspects pictured here include Jonas Mekas, George Maciunas, Emmett Williams, Alison Knowles, Robert Watts, Yoshimasa Wada, Joan Mathews, Geoff and Bici Hendricks, Dick Higgins, Peter Van Riper, Wolf Vostell, Donna and Joe Jones, Henry Flynt, and numerous unidentified participants. Also included is the publisher's loose caption sheet identifying the images. A handsome example of this uncommon item (cited on pages 185-190 of Phillip E. Aarons' "In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955") complete with caption sheet showing some very slight toning along with a discreet half-inch separation along one of the folds. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Fluxus Periodical.
