Card covers, 160pp, b&w photos. New copy. Diamantina is Australias largest WWII survivor and the last of over 200 River class and variant frigates the Allies built during that conflict. Built in Queensland, HMAS Diamantina went to war at Bougainville in 1945, then was the venue for the Japanese surrenders at Nauru and Ocean Island. In two commissions between 1945 and 1980, Diamantina gave outstanding service to the nation - in war, in making the peace, during the Cold War, and in oceanographic research. In conjunction with bodies like CSIRO, she carried out oceanographic research in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and also trained thousands of Navy recruits. Decommissioned in 1980, HMAS Diamantina is now a major attraction at Queensland's Maritime Museum located on the Brisbane River. The 160 page book was written by Peter Nunan of the Queensland Maritime Museum, and is well illustrated with photos of the ship's two commissions.
