Plutarchs Lives, translated from the original Greek; with notes critical and historical, and a life of Plutarch. 1st edition thus, with corrections and additions by Rev. Francis Wrangham. Tears to the tail of the spines of Volume one and eight, the tails of the other volumes are only affected by rubbing. Areas of the spines of volumes three and five appear to be burnt, though the gilt can still be seen. Mostly free from browning and foxing except for the seventh and eighth volumes. Pictures on request.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcovers in early (likely original) full leather bindings. Originally issues in 8 volumes - this set bound in 4. Brown leather with black title labels on the spine, along with volume numbers and gold bands. Bindings tight, with some rubbing and scuffing. Each of the 8 volumes is paginated separately, with its own title page. At the end of the first book there is a tear to the upper corner resulting in the loss of some text, on the final two leaves. The final page of text seems to be missing altogether. All 4 volumes have a bookplate on the inside front cover with the name 'Paul Sleman Clark.' All have a small rubberstamp on the inside back cover with the Clark coat of arms and the word Clark. This is a nice early Philadelphia edition of Plutarch. Volumes measure 4.25 x 7 inches. They take up just over 6" of shelf space. International shipping will require some extra postage, because this is a 4 volume set.
