EXCERPT: FOREWORD Few historical characters have maintained so affectionate a hold on the hearts of all English-speaking people as have Prince Charles Edward ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") and Flora Macdonald, the young girl who rendered him such great assistance during his wanderings after the Battle of Culloden had terminated the '45 Rising. Today, some two hundred years after the events which brought them together, their names are indissolubly associated with the glamour of an adventure which has always stirred me. The reason for this may lie in my Highland blood, being a cousin of the late Chief and Captain of Clanranald, but whatever the cause the lives and times of the last male representatives of the House of Stuart have always held for me an absorbing interest and I have long felt an urge to write about them. Hence this book, in which I have endeavoured to depict as accurately as possible the drama in which they were the chief actors and in which I am able to publish, for the first time, a letter supposed to have been written by Flora Macdonald on the day she joined the fugitive Prince Charles in Benbecula. Also her "Life", incorporating briefly the very latest information regarding her subsequent movements in America and elsewhere, and the Prayer attributed to the Prince which he said before the Battle of Gladsmuir, or Prestonpans.
