The book is very good sound and clean, with a Christmas gift inscription dated 1956 on the front free endopaper, otherwise unmarked throughout, with some age darkening to the top edge. The dustwrapper is price clipped, the red lettering on the spine has faded, and is generally a little marked, with some spotting along the folds, lightly edge worn with one edge tear of about 1 cm.Overall in very good condition.

Published in the UK a year after the true first edition and the same year Hemingway was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the book, this is the first illustrated edition. Two artists were commissioned for the illustrations and both were so superb, the publisher decided to include both sets in the final work.
