Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Introduction by Martin Hume, M.A. Has a map and 75 illustrations. From the author: The purpose of this work is to treat of Mexico as a topographical and political entity, based upon a study of the country from travel and observations; a method such as has found favour in my book upon Peru. The method of viewing a country as a whole, with its people, topography, and general conditions in natural relation to each other, is one which commands growing acceptance in a busy age. I have been able to observe much of the actual life and character of Spanish-American countries from considerable travel therein. Both Mexico and Peru ever lured me on as seeming to hold for me some El Dorado, and if I have not reaped gold as the Conquistadores did, there are nevertheless other matters of satisfaction accruing to the traveller from his journeys in those splendid territories of mountain and forest. Mexico, superfluous to say, is not part of South America, although this book appears in this series. But it is part of that vast Spanish-speaking New World whose development holds much of interest; and which may occupy a more important part in coming years than is generally thought of at present. The outer spine is basically gone and loosened (see pictures). Rough deckled page edges. Tanning throughout. Wear to boards.

Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, top edge gilt, uncut, xvi, 332 pp., folding map. Very Good+. Photographs gladly provided upon request. From Preface: It is the purpose of this book to present a survey of life in the United States, considered in the light of present social evolution. The pictures drawn are not hasty generalizations, but the result of some years' travel and residence in the country, tempered by much thought about the American people and sympathy with their development. The study of Democracy, its virtues and defects, is much before the world at the present time; and America is working out problems whose teaching are of great value to Britain. In which country shall first germinate the spirit of true "Imperialism"which, we trust, is to be born out of this commercial age? Which community will first form that great "Imperial Commonwealth," which by the organization of its natural resources for the benefit of its people will establish its civilization on an enduring basis? Will it be Britain or America? In old Europe we are constantly looking towards the Americans to mark how their civilization unfolds, always expecting that in a New World, untrammelled by the traditions of the old, they will have taken a step forward in the betterment of society. We are still hoping; but doubtless the real fact is that the old and the new worlds are indispensable to each other, and that their civilizations must advance cojointly. At present the Americans are on the full tide of their material prosperity, such as precedes a more humane civilization. Chapter Headings: A Preliminary Glance; Topographical: East and South; Topographical: South and West; American Travel; American Scenery; The American Cities; City Life in America; American Types and Traits; The American People; Tariffs, Tyranny, Officialdom; Trusts and "Kings"; The War of Steel; The Workers and the Strikers; The Sins of Democracy; The American Peril; The American Cain; American Newspapers, Humour and Pies; America and Britain; Britain and America.
