Paperback. Condition: Good. Staples have pulled through cover which is now loose. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. From the Foreword: The author is convinced that the best way to learn more about ships is to write and publish what he already knows, be that complete or not. If what he has published is complete and correct, other competent ship historians will confirm his findings. If incomplete, they will invariably supply additional data. Such an evolution has taken place with regard to the story of the Lakers of World War I. In 1956, when the writer was editor of the "Detroit Marine Historian," published by the Marine Historical Society of Detroit, he ran a brief, factual list of the Lakers in seven articles from September, 1956 through March 1957, and asked readers for more information. The response was prompt, generous and encouraging. Subsequently the writer expanded this list into a series of eleven longer articles which have appeared in "Telescope, journal of the Great Lakes Maritime Institute, at various times in 1964, 1965, and 1966. Again, he asked for further information where "needed, and received it. This booklet is the result of all the earlier efforts, and is, we believe, reasonably complete and accurate. In this project the writer wishes to give three key facts about each ship described, namely a) the construction data; b) the later renames of the vessel; and c) the final disposition. In all fairness to his readers the writer also clearly states that certain facts are not contained herein. Engine data is not given for each ship, but is lumped together in an appendix. Owners of. the ships, after their sale by the United States Shipping Board, are not listed in detail. To have done so would have increased the size (and the cost) of this booklet by nearly one hundred percent. There is an appendix with some data on American fleets which acquired Lakers after World War I. Other appendices add some interesting observations. The illustrations used in this booklet are those which accompanied the Laker articles in "The Detroit Marine Historian" and in "Telescope." 107 pages.
