First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Cover by Harrison Fisher / Dean Cornwell, James Mongomery Flagg, W.C. Hoople, others contribute (illustrator). 1st Edition. Multiple pages dog-eared and OK, the previous owner should not have clipped the colorful title from the top of Eugene Manlove Rhodes' Western story "Shoot the Moon" (though all the text remains), nor fiddled with Scotch Tape around the bottom of the spine -- two ill-considered moves which reduce our grade here to "Fair." But what remains! An essay on Science and Religion by everybody's favorite European dictator, Benito Mussolini. (Yes, Really. No, Hitler didn't rise to power till '32.); Edison's Life Story, as told by Henry Ford; complete short stories by Sinclair Lewis (illustrated by James Montgomery Flagg), Rex Beach, Booth Tarkington, Rafael Sabatini (a swashbuckling pirate tale illustrated by Dean Cornwell), Anita Loos, Robert Payson Terhune, George Ade . . . it's a crash course in the popular literature of the 1920s! Color ad to inside of rear wrap reports 20,679 physicians recommend Lucky Strike (in the green pack) because that toasted tobacco is "less irritating"; back page ad for Coca-Cola features multiple Ford tri-motors dropping in at Kingman, "hot spot of the Arizona desert" for a refreshing bottle of Coke. Reduced from $17.50.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THE MCKINLEY AND ROOSEVELT ADMINISTRATIONS, 1897-1909, James Ford Rhodes, hardcover, probable first edition, illustrated with a few portraits, 1922. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate but the signature of a prior owner is written on the first free endpaper along with Christmas 1922. There is a wrinkle/crease at the bottom of the inside cover and first free endpaper, which lightly affects the next 80 pages. Not a library book or remainder. The top edge is gilt. Smudging on the fore-edge. The dark club cloth boards are in good condition (some smudges and spots, bumped corners, external crease at the lower lefthand corner of the front cover which causes that internal imperfection, bumped spine top and bottom). 9 x 6, 418 pages, 26 ounces XX [From Charles R. Langley?s review, The American Political Science Review, May 1923] Mr. Rhodes' The McKinley and Roosevelt Administrations more resembles excellent raw material for a volume on the period 1897-1909 than it does a finished product. The narrative lacks cohesiveness, the transitions are abrupt and confusing, and the number of quotations is uncommonly large. The lack of cohesiveness appears, for example, in the account of the anti-trust activities of President Roosevelt. The several events in this series of acts, such as the coal strike settlement, the anti-trust legislation of 1903, the Hepburn Act, etc., appear as separate episodes rather than as parts of a connected whole. Quotations large and small appear on almost every page. Sometimes they impede the flow of the narrative, as on p. 170 where some humorous remarks of Mr. Dooley on the electrical display at the Buffalo Exposition are placed in the midst of the account of McKinley's fatal visit to Buffalo. In other places (pp. 178, 238, 244, and others), phrases and sentences are quoted which have no significance and could much better have been put in the author's own words. ? One of these cases is an account of the panic of 1907 consisting of approximately two hundred and seventy-eight lines, of which one hundred and twelve are quotations; one is an account of our relations with Cuba in 1906, in seventy-four lines Of which fifty-five are quotations; another concerns the election of 1908 and is composed of ten and a half pages, of which seven and one-half are taken up with a letter from Roosevelt to Sir George Otto Trevelyan on the subject. Another surprising defect (to have done with adverse criticism) is the account of the election of 1896. ? On the other hand the most valuable portions of Mr. Rhodes' book are those in which the author supplements what has already been known by his own personal contacts with the men of the period, especially President Roosevelt and Mark Hanna. Chapter X on the Panama Canal and Chapter XI on the relations between Roosevelt and Hanna are strong chapters. A particular point of interest is the statement which Roosevelt made to Mr. Rhodes that he had made a mistake in inviting Booker Washington to dinner.
