Item Description: Verlag Hermann Reckendorf G.M.B.H., Berlin, 1929. First Edition. First Edition. Small quarto. A companion volume to Werner Graff's "Es Kommt der Neue Fotograf," an early and highly influential study of experimental film published to coincide with the 1929 Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart. Illustrated with numerous photographs, film stills, and film strips, with photographic reproductions by many of the important avant-garde artists of the era, including Man Ray, Duchamp, Leger, and Richter himself. A fascinating book from several perspectives. Not only one of the first books to attempt to characterize early avant-garde filmmaking, but a lushly produced volume, with hundreds of stills from various early experimental films, speaking not only to concept but also to technique and method. The stills selected by Richter include not only strips and stills of the films discussed, but also rare images of candid on-set images of the filmmakers at work.Fine in an Near Fine, exceptionally sharp example of the scarce dust jacket, with only a bit of horizontal creasing on the jacket spine panel to note. Item Description: Zoological Society of London, London, 1900. Cloth - Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. J. G. Keulemans, J. Jury, and H. C. Richter (illustrator). First Edition. Volume XV, pp 109-290, plus plates, of the Transactions of the Zoological Society. Bound in blue cloth and lacking original paper wrap covers. Otherwise complete with 18 hand colored lithographs by J. G. Keulemans (Plates XXII - XXXIX), two map plates (XL & XLI), and four Photoprints (XLII-XLV). Also inserted in plates section are six hand colored lithographs by J. Jury from Vol. 4 of the Transactions, including Plates 71 (Casuarius Galeatus), 73 (Casuarius Bicarunculatus), 74 (Casuarius Uni-Appendiculatus), 72 (Casuarius Bennettii), 75 (Dromaeus Novae Hollandiae), 76 (Dromaeus Irroratus), and one hand colored lithography by H. C. Richter from Vol. 3, being plate 57 (Apteryx Owenii). Plain dark blue cloth covers, with gold lettering on spine, show a little rubbing and very light discoloration near edges. Text is tight and very clean. All Keulemans plates remain in Very good - Fine condition, with only light age toning to the paper. Images remain very bright and clean. The Jury plates are all about Very good, with a little more age toning to the paper and occasional smudges and a small stain, though all in blank peripheral space and not affecting images. The Jury images are all very bright and clean. Jury plate 73 was inserted between Keulemans plates XXVIII and XXIX, and the leaves stick at about one half inch from binding. This affects only the blank space along the binding edge of these three sheets and there has been no effort to separate them. There is no impact upon the images. Finally, the Richter plate which is just a little smaller than the others, has been affixed at all four corners to a blank sheet the same size as the others, and bound in. This plate shows some smudges along the edges, though the image remains bright and clean. There is a little light foxing affecting the verso of the photoprints. Photographs available upon request. Size: 4to. Bookseller Inventory # 031675

In his new artist book Gerhard Richter takes an image of his painting Abstract Painting (724-4), 1990, and divides this vertically into strips: first 2, then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, up to 4096 strips. This process (twelve stages of division) results in 8190 strips, each of which is the height of the original image. With each stage of division the strips become progressively thinner (a strip of the 12th division is 0,08 mm). Endless more divisions are possible, but they would become visible only by enlargement. Each strip is then mirrored and repeated which results in patterns. The number of repetitions increases with each stage of division in order to make patterns of consistent size. The publication results in documenting the listed 221 patterns on 246 double page images. Item Description: Berlin., Hermann Reckendorf, 1929. 125 S., 1 Bl. Mit zahlr. Abb. 4°, Orig.-Leinenbd mit illustr. -Schutzumschlag. Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Roland Jaeger, Bleibende Dokumente des Neuen Sehens, Der Verlag Hermann Reckendorf, Berlin, in: Autopsie, Deutschsprachige Fotobücher 1918 bis 1945, Bd. I, Hrsg.: Manfred Heiting u. - Andel 388. 600 gr. Item Description: Francis C. Richter, Philadelphia, 1914. Hardcover. First edition. 306pp., illustrated from photographs. The front fly lacking, with some erosion to the cloth at the spine ends, and a little foxing. A well-worn but sound, good copy of this classic baseball book with a nice association, Inscribed by Richter to his son: "To my dear son Francis C. Jr. with the best wishes of his father. Francis C. Richter. Philadelphia Pa. March 14, 1914." As a writer, Richter was an influential force in the early development of the game. Beginning with the *Philadelphia Day* in 1872, then the *Sunday World* and *Public Ledger*, he was the first to set up a separate sports department for any newspaper. Richter was instrumental in the formation of the original American Association in 1882 and helped to place the Philadelphia Athletics in it. The next year he helped to organize the Phillies in the National League and started *Sporting Life*, a weekly newspaper, which became a great force in baseball. In 1907 he was offered the presidency of the National League but turned it down. He edited the *Reach Guide* from its inception in 1901 to the 1926 volume, which he completed days before his death. A splendid association copy. #314522. Bookseller Inventory # 314522

Item Description: Lincoln Center, 2003. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. No Jacket. Richter, Gerhard (illustrator). 1st Edition. this is not a book!!! this is a superb silkscreen abstract artwork / poster produced by richter to benefit the lincoln center arts programs. The total edition was 500 copies and it is long sold-out and unavailable. this was printed by Brand X Printers and utilized 46 different screens. the poster edition is unsigned and not numbered. 45 x 34.5". brand new condition. please contact us or check online for photos.================================================================== ================When you think of the world famous artists who have appeared at Lincoln Center, you're more likely to think of performers like Ren?e Fleming, Mikhail Baryshnikov, or Joshua Bell than visual artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, or Gerhard Richter. In fact, all three painters have produced work for Lincoln Center as part of the List Poster and Print program, which was established in 1962 to bring world-class contemporary poster art to the new performing arts center. In the almost 45-year history of the program, there have been only two photography commissions: a 1979 Richard Avedon poster paying tribute to the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and now ?? at a moment when all eyes are on the Metropolitan Opera, about to open its first season under the new general manager, Peter Gelb ?? a photograph taken backstage at the Met by the Cuban-born photographer Abelardo Morell. On Monday evening, the night of the Met's opening gala, an exhibition of Mr. Morrell's backstage photography will open at the Gallery at Lincoln Center, which is on the lower level concourse of the Opera House. (The Met, incidentally, recently started its own visual arts gallery, called the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Gallery Met, located in the lobby of the Opera House.)The director of visual arts at Lincoln Center, Tom Lollar, said he hopes that opera patrons, on their way upstairs from the parking garage, will be drawn by Mr. Morrell's largescale photographs of the Opera House and will discover the gallery, which he acknowledges is, in its current location, hard to find. Part of Lincoln Center's redevelopment plans involves moving it to a more prominent, above-ground space. In 1962, Albert and Vera List made a $1 million gift both to endow the poster and print program and to commission public artworks, like the Jasper Johns painting in the New York State Theater and the Henry Moore sculpture that emerges from the reflecting pool. The Lists had admired the posters designed by artists for institutions like the Paris Opera, and they wanted Lincoln Center to be graced with as distinguished and distinctive graphic art as its European counterparts, Mr. Lollar said. The first director of the poster program was Delmar Hendricks, who was also the booking manager for Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls. Mr. Lollar took over from him in 1988.Mr. Lollar said that, in contrast to the public artworks, most of which have been in place for decades, the List program has kept Lincoln Center's collection current. Mr. Lollar commissions four or five artists a year to design posters, most of which are linked to events or venues, like the Mostly Mozart Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, or an anniversary. The prints appear in unusually numbered editions, like 54, 72, or 108, because Mrs. List was interested in numerology and wanted the edition numbers to add up to nine. The artist designs the entire poster, including the typeface. (There is no writing on the signed prints, only the posters.) Sometimes the art makes specific visual references to the program being advertised ? a Donald Baechler poster for Mostly Mozart, for example, includes images of Mozart ? but in many posters, the connection between text and image is looser. A 2005 Richard Artschwager poster for the Lincoln Center Festival shows an image of conjoined figures (the title of the print is "Liebespaar," or lovers) that seem to be dancing ? thus conveying the dynamism of the festival's offerings, which include dance.Mr. Bookseller Inventory # ig

Item Description: Francis C. Richter, Philadelphia, 1914. Hardcover. First edition. 306 pp., copiously illustrated after photographs. Slight soiling to the boards, and a little edgewear, still a near fine copy of a very important baseball book. As a writer and associate of baseball officials, Richter was an influential force in the early development of the game. Beginning with the *Philadelphia Day* in 1872, then the *Sunday World* and *Public Ledger*, he was the first to set up a Sports Department for any newspaper. Richter helped form the original American Association in 1882 and to place the Philadelphia Athletics in it. The next year he helped organize the Phillies in the National League. In 1883, he started *Sporting Life*, a weekly newspaper, which became a great force in baseball. In 1907, he was offered the presidency of the National League, but turned it down. He edited the *Reach Guide* from its inception in 1901 to the 1926 volume, which he completed days before his death. A superior copy of a book usually found well worn. Bookseller Inventory # 77770

Item Description: Hubbard Brothers, Publishers, Philadelphia, 1889. Hardcover. First edition. Thick small quarto. Decorated brown cloth lettered and illustrated in gilt and black. 711pp., illustrated, four color chromolithograph plates. Corners a little bumped, else a fine copy, and as nice as we've seen. Although the book covers most popular field sports of the era, it is overwhelmingly devoted to baseball, and includes profiles of all the current professional teams, college baseball, and with what would in another context be a book-long account of the 1888-9 world barnstorming tour between the Chicago Baseball Club and an opposing all-star squad. Three of the four color illustrations are of baseball, including the wonderful frontispiece view of a baseball game outside London's Crystal Palace, the fourth is of a cricket match. Many black and white illustrations of individual baseball players, as well as of teams and important games. A beautiful copy of a keystone title for any serious baseball collection.
