Item Description: Pencil and watercolour (36.5 x 54.3cm) with touches of white heightening and gum arabic. Numbered '4.49'. Framed and glazed: 83.5 by 66.5cm. Superb original watercolour with fine contemporary provenance for John Gould's Birds of Great Britain. Henry Constantine Richter (1821–1902), one of the most notable natural history illustrators of the nineteenth century, produced numerous lithographs of birds and mammals, mainly under the employment of John Gould. Gould stated in his book Birds of Great Britain, from which this plate is taken, that 'Whimbrels usually arrive in England in the early part of May, and disperse themselves along our coasts, particularly those of the eastern counties; they are then on their passage northwards: but a few remain to breed on the moors of Scotland, and perhaps on the northern parts of England'. In the image the male is depicted in the foreground with a female behind. Frederick DuCane Godman (1834 – 1919) was an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist. He was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Along with Osbert Salvin, he is remembered for studying the fauna and flora of Central America. Gould. Item Description: Pencil and watercolour (36.5 x 54.3cm) heightened with white and gum arabic. Numbered '4.37'. Framed and glazed: 83.5 by 66.5cm. Superb original watercolour with fine contemporary provenance for John Gould's Birds of Great Britain. Henry Constantine Richter (1821–1902) was a zoological illustrator who produced numerous lithographs of birds and mammals, mainly under the employment of John Gould, an English ornithologist. Gould employs two illustrations of plovers in his book Birds of Great Britain, from which this plate is taken, to show that 'A greater transformation in the garb of birds does not exist than occurs in the spring and autumnal plumage of this bird. It is in the spring that the Grey (Black-bellied) Plover with its fine black breast flies over the eastern parts of England en route for countries further north.' An adult bird is depicted in winter plumage with a young bird born earlier in the year. With provenance: Frederick DuCane Godman ( 1834 – 1919) was an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist. He was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Item Description: second part of XIX c. Pencil and watercolour (35.3 x 53.0cm) with touches of white heightening and gum arabic. Numbered '4.58'. Of the sandpiper, Gould observed in his book Birds of Great Britain, from which this plate is taken: 'How much pleasure have they lost who have not seen this nimble and elegant species tripping over the pebbly bottoms of our rivulets or the greensward fringing the river-banks, or witnessed how it imparts life to the scene in the neighbourhood of the glassy Highland loch!'. He regarded the arrival of the sandpiper in mid April with special interest, for it 'gives an additional zest to the anticipation of a forthcoming summer'. In this image the male and female of the species are depicted with a nest of young and an egg. Frederick DuCane Godman ( 1834 – 1919) was an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist. He was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Along with Osbert Salvin, he is remembered for studying the fauna and flora of Central America. Gould. Item Description: Baumgärtnerischen Buchhandlung Leipzig c., 1804. Four parts in 1 volume, 4to (30 x 24.4 cm). Text in French and German. X, 28, [4], [29]-64, [6], [65]-100, [6], [101]-142 pp, with 40 aquatint plates in contemporary hand colour; erased stamp to title, moderate dampstain with tide-marks visible throughout, usually pale, stains to pl 31, about 4 plates discoloured in sky but otherwise colours generally fresh. Contemporary half calf over paste-paper boards, spine gilt with morocco labels; mild wear to binding, text block cracked in a couple of places. First edition of these lively hand-coloured scenes - uncommon. The artist Geissler (1770 - 1844), who accompanied Peter Simon Pallas on his expedition to southern Russia from 1793-1794, created these forty lovely engravings after the sketches which he made during his long trip. The first part of the work is fully dedicated to Russian festivities and games, which provided foreigners with probably the most detailed insight into this sphere of Russian people's life at that time. Curiously, in most of his illustrations Geissler adopted a grotesque manner, depicting the characters with slightly distorted proportions of the body and apparent naivety. The predominance of scenes of leisure and games in the work contributes to the impression that Geissler intended to portray Russia as an exotic place left behind the progress and cultural development of the Western world - which was a reason behind Catherine the Great's bad opinion of Geissler's sketches and the mild ban she introduced. Item Description: The Author 1840-, London, 1869. Hand-coloured lithograph, 510 x 350 mm, very good, framed with text verso. A striking image of the Long-billed White Cockatoo, Licmetis Nasicus: this is an original hand coloured lithographic plate from Gould's most famous work, Birds of Australia.John Gould's great contribution to ornithology was his lavish series of colourplate folios and his serious scientific interest in Australian birds. The Literature of Australian Birds by Whittell lists 102 books and scientific papers by Gould on the subject. 'What of Gould's own role and his historical place in relation to the ornithology of Australia? Gould's enterprise flourished in the era of extensive collecting of birds and the description of species. There is no doubt that he had a brilliant natural talent for the recognition of new species characters in birds and therefore the science of avian systematics (taxonomy) involved with describing and naming bird species. This he linked with both expertise in taxidermy and an ability to capture the field character of birds in rough sketches? Although many of Gould's systematic placings have not been preserved by modern research, a remarkable number of his names have survived and some of the forms he found puzzling remain so today. Nothing can detract from this gargantuan achievement that ranks highly in the world's ornithology' (McEvey).Birds of Australia is a great tribute to Australia and was one of Gould's most successful projects. 'Only 250 copies have been printed, and the drawings have been effaced from stones; of these, 180 were subscribed for, the remaining seventy the author proposes to issue upon the original terms, with the exception, that five or more parts shall be delivered in the course of each year instead of four; the delivery to commence on the 1st of January 1849' (Prospectus). Item Description: Germany, 1942. Unbound. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: None. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. [Original Manuscript] GERMAN ROCKETRY. In German. 164 pages loose in old folder. Highly technical writings, mathematical equations and analysis, graphs, charts etc. Signed Hilly Richter 24 January, 1942. Entitled "Auftriebs verteilung Richtung flugeltiefe auf grund der theorie der dunnen Profile," relating to theories of lift distribution and flight direction. The folder labeled "Rakete Theorie". Clearly, the date of the manuscript would put in squarely in the period of World War II and the great German advances in aeronautics. Civilian and military efforts in the field of rocketry in all other nations combined paled in comparison with the strides made in Germany, where the first A-4 was tested with complete success on October 3, 1942. The very first A-4 rocket reached an altitude of 50 miles and flew a distance of 120 miles. The A-4, later renamed V-2, would go on to lay the cornerstone of modern rocketry. Fascinating World War II relic and collectible of significance. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Signed by Author. German Language. Bookseller Inventory # 000025B

Item Description: Walther Koenig, Cologne, 2011. First edition. Original wrappers. Still in publisher's numbered box. One of the signed 200 copies of a limited edition totaling 800 copies. De Luxe edition. Subtitle: DIVIDED MIRRORED. Each of the 246 double page images has been produced by the same lacquer covering process as the individual prints later made from the Patterns, in a 7-colour Aniva system on 200 grams per cubic metre Galaxi Supermat paper. As described by the publishers: Gerhard Richter took an image of his painting Abstract Painting (724-4), 1990 (which hung above the breakfast/dinner table for 17 years) and divides this vertically into strips: first 2, then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, up to 4096 strips. This process (twelve stages of division) results in 8190 strips, each of which is the height of the original image. With each stage of division the strips become progressively thinner (a strip of the 12th division is 0,08 mm). Endless divisions are possible, but they would become visible only by enlargement. Each strip is then mirrored and repeated which results in patterns. The number of repetitions increases with each stage of division in order to make patterns of consistent size. The publication results in documenting the listed 221 patterns on 246 double page images. Patterns is published in a limited edition of 800 numbered copies, of which 50 h.c. copies are numbered with Roman numerals I-L. The copies nos. 1 - 200 are signed and are designated an artist’s book signed edition. Still in original publishers packaging and mailing box, unopened. Jury from Vol. 4 of the Transactions, including Plates 71 (Casuarius Galeatus), 73 (Casuarius Bicarunculatus), 74 (Casuarius Uni-Appendiculatus), 72 (Casuarius Bennettii), 75 (Dromaeus Novae Hollandiae), 76 (Dromaeus Irroratus), and one hand colored lithography by H. C. Richter from Vol. 3, being plate 57 (Apteryx Owenii). Plain dark blue cloth covers, with gold lettering on spine, show a little rubbing and very light discoloration near edges. Text is tight and very clean. All Keulemans plates remain in Very good - Fine condition, with only light age toning to the paper. Images remain very bright and clean. The Jury plates are all about Very good, with a little more age toning to the paper and occasional smudges and a small stain, though all in blank peripheral space and not affecting images. The Jury images are all very bright and clean. Jury plate 73 was inserted between Keulemans plates XXVIII and XXIX, and the leaves stick at about one half inch from binding. This affects only the blank space along the binding edge of these three sheets and there has been no effort to separate them. There is no impact upon the images. Finally, the Richter plate which is just a little smaller than the others, has been affixed at all four corners to a blank sheet the same size as the others, and bound in. This plate shows some smudges along the edges, though the image remains bright and clean. There is a little light foxing affecting the verso of the photoprints. Photographs available upon request. Band 21: Registerband. Sept. 44". 21,5:25,8 cm. Im ganzen nicht ganz frisch. Provenienz: Sammlung M.K.H. Rech, Lugt Suppl. 2745b. Lt. Bookseller Inventory # 342-E
