Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Adam Lindsay Gordon's poems continue to be read and treasured by Australians. Field sports, horses, and the open-air life, the inspiration of so much of his work, and his own ability and daring, are things dear to the Australian heart. His more serious thought, too, heavy with overtones of his fateful family background and personal experiences, has its own appeal and interest. This annotated edition of his poems contains the well-known Life (124 pages) by Frank Maldon Robb, who combines careful treatment of facts with a personal loyalty to Gordon, which gives him a rare understanding of a promising life that ended so tragically. In particular Robb shows the extent of Gordon's debt to English literature, to Byron, Swinburne, and Browning. There are appendices on Gordon as a Member of Parliament and as a letter-writer, an 'In Memoriam' by his friend Kendall, and some few stray poems.
