Item Description: Rome, Giovanni Giacomo Rossi, early 17th century. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. Suite of 8 engraved plates depicting the most notable gardens of contemporary 17th century Rome. Rome, sold by Giovanni Giacomo Rossi, early 17th century. Small folio. 8 engraved plates with title and descriptive key in roman and italic letter (each 260 x 380mm). Bound in old limp vellum with decorative ornamental blind-stamped covers. A portfolio of garden designs individually selected from the Roman print seller, Giovanni Rossi, and privately bound. Collections of prints were acquired by travellers in Italy from about 1600, either as reminders of a visit, or, as is most likely in the present case, for use as a pattern book of ideas in laying out one’s own grounds. The gardens represented here are as follows: Villa Pamphili, Villa Borghese, Montalto (signed by M.Greuter), Villa Medici, Villa Mattei, the Belvedere (in the Vatican), Monte Cavallo, and the Villa d’Este (by Francisco Corduba). Each design is markedly differnt in layout and aspect giving a broad spectrum of ideas and features for a spectacular Baroque garden. As a collection of prints, there is no comparison for collation, however references below show similar series. See Berlin Catalogue 2660, 3492; Arrigoni Bertarelli, Piante e vedute di Roma e del Lazio; see also M.L.Gothein, A History of Garden Art (1928) for description of each of the above gardens, and compare figs. 183, 231,232, and 238.
