The recipient, Bryony Evens was one of the first people to read the opening chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first to recognize the workâs inherent value, and perhaps the most instrumental figure in getting the book published. Working at the time at Christopher Little Literary Agency in Scotland, Evens was the first point of contact in receiving and sorting unsolicited manuscripts. Evens read Rowlingâs submission of the first three chapters of the book and passed it along to Little, who approved that she obtain the full manuscript and promote it to suitable publishers. Given a small budget, Evens was only able to print three manuscripts to pitch to publishing houses and, after twelve months and twelve rejections, was finally given the green light by editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury in London. Bloomsbury published the book on June 26, 1997. A year later, Bryony attended a Harry Potter book signing event where Rowling received her with open arms and warmly inscribed the present volume. Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International in 1990 when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London. The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband, and relative poverty. A true "rags to riches" story, the publication of the present volume would bring her from living on benefits to billionaire status. She was named the world's first billionaire author by Forbes in 2014 and the Harry Potter series has become the best-selling book series of all time. At the time of the bookâs publication in 1996, illustrator Thomas Taylor had just graduated from art school and was working at Heffers Childrenâs Bookshop in Cambridge. At Heffers, Taylor educated himself on the childrenâs book market and its major publishers and decided to submit a portfolio of his illustrations to the offices of Bloomsbury Publishing, including several drawings of dragons and wizards. Taylor heard back from Bloomsburyâs editor, Barry Cunningham (who had recently decided to take a chance on publishing Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone after it had been rejected by twelve other publishers) almost immediately. Cunningham phoned him at Heffers and asked if he could create a design for the cover of a relatively unknown authorâs first book about a schoolboy wizard. The publisher's laminated boards are very clean indeed with no laminate lifting whatsoever. There is very light bruising to the head of the spine which is also very lightly fading to the red portion of the upper spine, perhaps only a shade, but still red in appearance. As can be seen in image number three. The mis-spelled Philospher's is present to the rear panel, with the Wizardry and Witchcraft, rather than Witchcraft and Wizardry also present. The binding is very well preserved, tight and solid, with the publisher's original laminate entirely present. Internally, the book is completely free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. The inner pages are clean and fresh with light toning to the page block, due to the cheap paper stock used, but less than what is invariably encountered with this title. No dog eared pages or internal, external soiling. Please be assured that this title is NOT an EX LIBRARY copy and has had none of the dreaded restoration, re colouring, or touching up performed to it. A lovely clean example and an outstanding copy in every way. Included with this book is a bespoke felt lined clam shell box with raised bands and with gilt lettering present to the spine. This copy was personally inscribed by Rowling during a visit to the shop in 1999. Condition: a very good specimen not restored in any way. Light creases to the wraps and shelf wear. Small ink stain to top page block. Internally clean. According to Errington [2015] and Bloomsbury records 200 proof copies have been printed. This stands against a first hardback print run of 500 copies intended for the library market and 5,150 paperbacks for the general public. Therefore, this is one of the rarest collectable Harry Potter book as not many proofs have survived the passage of time, made even scarcer by the fact that this is a signed and inscribed copy. Brown served as Director of Literature at the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) from 1996 through 2002. This copy comes from the Brown family via Bonhams (sale December 1, 2021, lot 165) We find just four other inscribed presentation copies of the first printing with documented provenance in public auction records. Only two of these four has a literary association (see below). In 1996 Jenny Brown, the newly appointed Director of Literature at the SAC, led an initiative to establish a new program to support authors of children's literature. The first applicant to the award for children's literature was J.K. Rowling. In 1996 Rowling received an £8000 grant from the SAC. Rowling later told the chairman of the Arts Council, Magnus Linklater, that the award "transformed her life by allowing her to pay for childcare during the whole of a year, it had allowed her to complete the second Harry Potter volume at a time when she had no prospects of success for the first" (Magnus Linklater, Prospect Magazine). The book is in fine condition, unread and with an unbroken spine. There are no previous owner's marks, no stamps, no bookplates. No creasing to spine or wraps whatsoever. No fading to the spine as often seen. Slight toning of paper commensurate with age. This is a natural process due to the cheap paper stock used by the publisher and inevitable over time. A superb copy, and we have never seen a better specimen. The card: handwritten on both sides, measuring 5.75″ x 4.25″, on Rowling's personal stationery card, no date but circa 2001, and addressed to Don Mackenzie. There is absolutely no fading to the spine, but there is a tiny indentation to the upper spine corner. The front and rear panels are very clean indeed with no creasing, and with no laminate lifting or loss to the paper covers. Internally, the pages are very lightly toned, but much less than usually encountered. Free of any foxing, with no previous owner names or inscriptions inset. The book is the correct UK first edition with the Wendy Cooling review to the front panel, the Philosophers printing error to the rear panel and with the correct 10-1 number sequence found to the copyright page. Included with this book is a Hogwart's Express card, signed by the author, with an accompanying letter of provenance from J K Rowling's PA, Fiddy Henderson, thanking the previous card's owner for their initial letter. Housed in a felt-lined clamshell box that has been custom-made for this book to ensure it does not get damaged in the future. A very nice book indeed that looks unread and has none of the usual fading to the spine invariably seen with this title. It is well known that the book was rejected by all the major publishers but interest was shown by Bloomsbury who made an offer to acquire the UK rights to the title for an advance of around £1500. There were 500 hardback copies and 5150 paperback copies printed simultaneously. Neither has bibliographic priority. This particular book is in extremely fine condition, a stunning copy without any colour fading. It is unread, the binding is extremely tight and square without shelf wear. There is a hint of toning to the page edges, which is always the case with these early paperback books due to the cheap paper stock used when printing. It is without doubt the best copy we have ever seen or encountered. The spine, front and back cover could be described as pristine, without marks or creases or any kind. Internally there are no marks, library stamps or ownership inscriptions, just a slight crease to the top corner of page 105. Aside from this, it is a pristine first printing paperback in beautiful condition housed in a quarter leather clamshell box made by The Chelsea Bindery specifically for this book. A true collector's piece in near perfect condition.

The first edition paperback of the first book in the phenomenally popular Harry Potter series. Both the hardcover and paperback of the first edition were printed on the same day, with neither having bibliographical priority. All of the first issue points are present with the complete number sequence of 10 down to 1, '1 wand' repeated twice on the equipment list on p. 53 and and the misprint "Philospher's" on the lower cover. This, Pippa Le Quesne's personal copy - Editorial Assistant at Bloomsbury during the period of publishing the first two instalments of the Harry Potter serie (1996 to 1998). As Pippa explains, "One of my jobs was to proof-read both type-set books and their covers. Although I had been on a proof-reading course, this was my first job in publishing and my eye clearly wasn't very sharp as it was me that made the infamous errors in the school list (a wand listed twice) within the text and the errors on the back cover of the Philospher's Stone. I met Jo Rowling when she came down from Scotland to see my boss (Sarah Odedina) and her editor (Emma Matthewson). She brought with her her daughter Jess, who I played with whilst she was busy talking to them. She signed another copy of the paperback first edition of the Philosopher's Stone for me, with the inscription "To Pippa, thanks for all of your help with me and my commas, love Jo". Sadly, I had to sell that in 2003 to pay my electricity bill (famously starter publishing salaries do not match the cost of living in London), but I do like the thought that it is out there somewhere in the world and someone is wondering who Pippa is! Another of my jobs was to clear the manuscript cupboard where we kept the original manuscripts until a book had been published, then they would be thrown away to make way for the next lot of commissioned manuscripts waiting to be edited/printed. So, another claim to fame (or biggest regret) is that I will have thrown into the bin various drafts of the first and second Harry Potter books, having no idea of their worth or interest in years to come. Jo Rowling worked on a typewriter rather than a computer initially (and yes, she really did hand write the first book in a cafe in Edinburgh). When she had finished the Chamber of Secrets she typed it up, packaged it up and sent it in the post to Bloomsbury. She did not even take a photocopy (because of the expense) but trusted Royal Mail entirely (bearing in mind this was before the first Harry Potter book had exploded) She phoned to say she had sent it, so we were expecting it within a couple of days. For some reason it took five or six days to arrive and we (including Jo) assumed it had got lost in the post! Huge relief all round when it arrived at Bloomsbury. An exceptional association copy of the first Harry Potter story - the first edition, first printing, famous for the two typographic errors and owned by the editorial assistant who missed them.

It is well known and well documented that the first printing had a print run of 500 hardcover copies and 5150 paperback copies. Within a week, numerous errors were noticed in the first printing and very quickly a second print run of 1000 hardcover copies was printed. This is one of those very rare 1/1000 copies in fine, beautiful condition. The most famous of the many errors corrected from the first printing to the second include the correction of the misspelled Philospher s on the rear cover along with Wizardry and Witchcraft, corrected to Witchcraft and Wizardry. Also, the very well known error of 1 wand listed twice on page 53, now correctly only appears once in the second printing. Similarities between the two still show the missing space between Thomas Taylor1997 on the copyright page as well as the Wendy Cooling quote A terrific read and a stunning first novel at the bottom of the front cover. The copyright page shows a number line of 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 to show that it is a second printing. This stunning copy has been beautifully preserved and has not undergone any restoration. It is clearly unread, the binding is still square and tight with no colour fading at all to the boards or spine. The page edges are surprisingly white and fresh which is extremely rare for these books which are well known for their cheap paper stock which is almost always found to be toned and discoloured. The corners of the boards are still sharp and the head and tail of the spine still appear firm. Internally, the pages are all present, clean with no library stamps, no dog eared pages, no personal inscriptions or writing of any kind. A true collector s copy. The book comes housed in a quarter leather, red clamshell box, custom made for this particular book to further preserve its condition. There was no dust jacket issued for the first and second printings of this book.

At the time of the bookâs publication in 1996, illustrator Thomas Taylor had just graduated from art school and was working at Heffers Childrenâs Bookshop in Cambridge. At Heffers, Taylor educated himself on the childrenâs book market and its major publishers and decided to submit a portfolio of his illustrations to the offices of Bloomsbury Publishing, including several drawings of dragons and wizards. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First edition. This copy exquisitely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full morocco of red and purple, in the spirit of the original boards. Front cover titling is in gilt as is Rowling's signature, these framing a panel of onlaid leathers enhanced with watercolor depicting Harry and the Hogwarts Express. At the rear cover, the same technique shows Dumbledore, again in reference to the original illustrated boards. Spine in six compartments with further gilt titling and ornamentation. Interiors of boards nicely finished with gilt and bindery stamp to foot of the inner front board. Silver silk doublures and all edges glittering with stars, to complete the production. A delightful copy, in due service to one of the pillars of young adult literature.
