Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. We were sold this book by one of those bulk online sellers as a copy "signed by author." As we knew Irwin Schiff and own several books signed by him, however, we immediately recognized the bold, felt-tip signature to title page here is NOT that or author Irwin Schiff. On a hunch, we proceeded to compare it to known signatures of another person known to us, Irwin Schiff's son, stockbroker and financial commentator Peter Schiff, and this book is indeed signed by Irwin's SON, Peter, long known for advising his clients to diversify out of investments denominated in inflation-prone U.S. dollars. (Yes, it would have been helpful had Peter inscribed "In my father's absence . . ." or something of the sort, but this one is "name only.") First printing with complete number line; "very good" jacket shows rub and rumpling to corners. For whatever reason, the elder Mr. Schiff (always an iconoclast) published this 1984 hardcover book on Social Security, and his 1985 trade paperback "The Great Income Tax Hoax," bearing identical ISBNs, 0-930374-05-3. (Yes, we've checked multiple copies.) Since computer programs will import cover art based on these supposedly unique International Standard Book Number identifiers, cover art for one book will sometimes display for the other. Book listed here is a blue cloth hardcover in a black and blue DJ bearing a full-color photographic image of a "house of cards" built of Social Security cards. "Social security . . . like socialism itself . . . owes its very existence to public ignorance and gullibility," the book begins. Social Security -- as the laws are written -- is in fact an income tax, Schiff demonstrates, and the government itself has argued in court filings that there is NO LINKAGE between the tax and the "benefits" paid out, which may be changed or eliminated as any future Congress sees fit. "This information is not provided for purposes of rendering legal or other professional services, which can only be provided by knowledgeable professionals on a fee basis," warns the disclaimer on the copyright page, prophetically. "Further, there is always an element of risk in standing up for one's lawful rights in the face of an oppressive taxing authority backed by a biased judiciary." In October of 2015, Irwin Schiff died in federal prison, jailed for exercising his First Amendment right to reveal the facts he had uncovered about the unconstitutional and extralegal tax system enforced by the collectivist thugs of Washington City, without ever being allowed to substantially present his findings to a jury -- citing chapter and verse of their own law -- or to cross-examine agents of the Treasury Department, the "IRS" or the Social Security Administration on their claims for the lawfulness and constitutionality of their current collection and enforcement regimes. Tear-out "Schiff Report" order card and DJ rear flap "additional information" coupon remain intact. 256 pp., reduced from $265.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. Number line 5 4 3 2. Thus, the second printing of the "Revised Third Edition 1999." This large glossy paperback is in "very good" condition. There's a vertical crease near front of spine, but this was caused by promotional material from Schiff's "Freedom Books" laid in at pg. 95, including an (unsigned) "We are pleased to enclose your copy of 'The Federal Mafia' . . ." form letter from Schiff. Book would otherwise grade fine unread. Inscribed & signed "Best Wishes, / Irwin Schiff" diagonally to title page. Disclaimer to copyright page states "There is always an element of risk in standing up for one's lawful rights in the face of an oppressive taxing authority backed by a biased judiciary. Therefore, the author and publisher disclaim any responsibility for any liability of (sic) loss incurred as a consequence of the use or application . . . of any advice or information presented herin (sic.)" Whether or not it's pragmatically wise to follow his advice, Schiff's historical research into the purposely confusing federal tax code and law (the code is not "law") -- and his insistence that as per the Brushaber and Eisner Supreme Court rulings the 16th amendment did not repeal the constitutional requirement that any federal tax must be collected either as a direct tax (divided among the states and then assessed by capitation) or else an indirect excise -- is intriguing. The federal response -- that the federal income tax is "neither kind of tax" and can thus be collected by means not legal for either kind of constitutional tax -- seems to come down to "because we say so and we've got the badges." In October of 2015, Irwin Schiff died in federal prison at the age of 87, of a cancer contracted there and not optimally treated, having been jailed for exercising his First Amendment rights on this subject, without ever being allowed by the federal courts to substantially present his findings to a jury -- citing chapter and verse of their own law and the relevant Supreme Court rulings -- or to confront and cross-examine agents of the Treasury, the "IRS" or the Social Security Administration (his accusers) at length on their claims for the lawfulness and constitutionality of their current collection and enforcement regimes (since of course such a defendant can't be allowed to present a substantive defense over the course of several days, lest the courtroom be "turned into a circus" -- a week of federal judge Kent Dawson's handsomely compensated time being far more valuable than 20 years of the defendant's.) 305 pp. Signed copies are uncommon. Reduced from $825. Inscribed by Author(s).

Dust jacket has a closed quarter-inch tear to top of front spine fold. Disclaimer opposite copyright page states "There is always an element of risk in standing up for one's lawful rights in the face of an oppressive taxing authority backed by a biased judiciary. The federal response -- that the federal income tax is "neither kind of tax" and can thus be collected by means not legal for either kind of constitutional tax -- seems to come down to "because we say so and we've got the guns and the badges." In October of 2015, Irwin Schiff died in federal prison at the age of 87, of a cancer contracted there and not optimally treated, having been jailed for exercising his First Amendment rights on this subject, without ever being allowed by the federal courts to substantially present his findings to a jury -- citing chapter and verse of their own law and the relevant Supreme Court rulings -- or to confront and cross-examine agents of the Treasury, the "IRS" or the Social Security Administration (his accusers) at length on their claims for the lawfulness and constitutionality of their current collection and enforcement regimes, since of course such a defendant can't be allowed to present a substantive defense over the course of several days, lest the courtroom be "turned into a circus" -- a week of the judge's handsomely compensated time being far more valuable than 20 years of the defendant's. (This is typical of the behavior of today's federal judges, by the way. They so limit the facts and defenses which they will "allow" defense attorneys to present -- especially the constitutionality of the "law" in question -- that the case is largely over before it begins.) 305 pp. Signed copies are uncommon.
