Board edges slightly worn, small unobtrusive stain to bottom edge of text block, dust-jacket with light edge-wear and two small closed tears. A very good copy of a book rarely found inscribed. SharaaÕs Pulitzer Prize-winning novel remains one of the most popular and influential works of Civil War fiction. ÒStephen Crane once said that he wrote The Red Badge of Courage because reading the cold history was not enough; he wanted to know what it was like to be there, what the weather was like, what menÕs faces looked like. In order to live it he had to write it. This book was written for much the same reasonÓ (Shaara). Bookseller Inventory # 106206

Item Description: David McKay, New York, 1974. Hardcover. Second edition. Fine in a partially spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author on the front fly: "To Reg -- Merry Christmas! Michael Shaara. Dec. 1974." With the bookplate of the recipient. Shaara was something of a difficult personality, and very seldom signed books. Because of the perfect binding, an ill-fated experiment by the publisher to lower production costs, this book is virtually always cocked, a flaw this copy does not exhibit. Basis for the movie *Gettysburg* and easily one of the very best and most beloved novels of the Civil War. It was also a surprise winner of the Pulitzer Prize. One of very few signed copies of this title that we've seen. See this book in 3D on our site. Bookseller Inventory # 284123

Also, I saw the play, AMADEUS, in NY. Seen that? I recommend it. Amazing. And sure is true. Well, hope you got through that winter in one piece. Only time I like Florida, truly, is January, Feb, and parts of March. Best, Michael Shaara". The third photocopied letter is undated on Shaara's Melbourne FL personal stationay: "Sorry this took so long. I just haven't been here much.
