Octavo, pp. [1-10] 11-110 [111: colophon] [112: blank], 8 illustrations, 1 map, cloth-backed boards. First printing of this new edition. Limited to 600 copies. The first (and only) printing prior to this one was produced in Boston in 1884 by Brown and Company. In the spring of 1871 Ralph Waldo Emerson traveled west with a party of eleven including Thayer. Though Emerson was sixty-eight years of age at the time, the group made the then-arduous journey to Yosemite. John Muir guided the party through the Mariposa Grove and urged Emerson to remain in Yosemite longer, but Emerson's companions discouraged a more lengthy stay. Thayer's account of the trip to Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa big trees comprises pages [53]-109, and is especially interesting for his observations of Muir, whom he referred to as "M." A portion of the narrative relating to Muir, as well as Muir's later recollections of Emerson's visit, appears in Samuel T. Farquhar, "John Muir and Ralph Waldo Emerson in Yosemite: Gathered from Their Writings and Correspondence," Sierra Club Bulletin, 19 (June 1934), [48]-55. BCC #163. A fine copy in unprinted white dust jacket with light tanning to spine panel and edges. (#165947).

23 cm, pp. [1], 2-15 [16], 9 illustrations, 1 map, original pictorial self wrappers, stapled. First edition. A pamphlet supporting the Gearhart Bill to establish Kings Canyon National Park. Efforts to protect this region as a national park went on for many years. In 1926 conflict over possible reservoir sites kept the Kings River watershed bout of the Sequoia National Park enlargement legislation passed by Congress. An agreement to build the Pine Flat Reservoir outside the park boundaries was in large part responsible for the passage of the Gearhart Bill which made Kings Canyon part of the national parks system on March 4, 1940.
