Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [book is only lightly worn, but with tape marks on both pastedowns and endpapers, numerous notes in ink on rear fep; jacket is in almost perfect condition, with just a smidge of surface wear]. Beginning with a history of Reading Gaol, a "rather horrific account of cruelties practised upon the criminal," the book examines the history of penal practice in Britain from the 16th century to the present day. The jacket blurb declares it to be "of great interest to workers in the prisoner and probation services, magistrates, [and] students in social studies and social history," but neglects to mention one other group which might be expected to take an especially keen interest in such matters: the convicts themselves. In the case of this particular book, it was indeed of special interest to one particular convict: the American actor Stacy Keach, who spent nine months in Reading Prison following his conviction on a drug possession charge in London in late 1984. Laid in is a blue slip of paper with the official date-stamp of H.M.P. Reading Library (9 Feb 85), on which is written "L55200 Keach / The Story of a Prison / His Personal Copy"; additionally, at the top of the ffep is written (in red ink) "Property of Stacy Keach, L55200," and (in black ink) "11 Feb. 1985." (These dates were approximately two months into Keach's sentence.).
