Pale blue paper-covered boards withgrey cloth spine strip and paper spine label. Boards lightly tanned, backstrip lightly browned and with wear to adges with some netting showing through. Spine label browned and with small piece missing from top margin and side edges worn away (Right han edge affecting part of the lettering only). Gift inscription at top of front endpaper "From Mrs. A. M. Adam / Cambridge 1943." Otherwise binding is firm and pages are clean.

Hardback. Blue paper covered boards with brown cloth backstrip, paper title label on spine, 12mo, xvii, 114 pp., frontis portrait of the author. Hewett (1893-1916) was born in India, educated at Downside and Balliol. He was at Savoy in 1914 and observed the French mobilization at the start of World War I. Returning to England, he was commissioned 2nd Lieut. in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Sent to France in February, 1916, he was killed July 22, 1916 during the Somme advance while leading his platoon near Highwood and Delville Wood. This book consists of a series of letters sent to his mother and sisters, and with an introduction by F. F. Urquhart of Balliol College, Oxford. No marks in book, hinges cracked but binding solid. Covers show minor edge wear. Book condition VG. Binding: HB.
