Pencil inscriptions to front endpaper. Boards have some moderate edge wear, with slight bumping to corners and minor bumping to spine ends. Unclipped jacket has some edgewear with chips, tears and creasing. Jacket is rather rubbed and marked overall.

More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Light creasing and staining to gutters but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has light tanning with minor staining, splitting and crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society.
