First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: Good -. D. Bryan Stone III (illustrator). First Edition. This 180-page, First Edition offering in VG-/G- condition is The Sharks of North American Waters by Jose I. Castro, published by Texas A & M University Press in 1983. Not an ex-library copy, this book's only weakness, really, is some slight yellowing of its pages, in an otherwise still really sound book for age 28. The dust jacket does show some wear, over time, with the main problem being a V-shaped missing piece of front cover, located at upper left corner of same, right next to jacket's spine, and measuring 15/16" at its widest point X 1" down from top edge of cover. The jacket has a somewhat "wrinkled" quality to it(perhaps from some previous moisture from the past, at some time), and there is also some light brownish staining on lower portion of jacket's back cover. From front inside jacket flap, "[Up until this volume] the lack of a comprehensive field guide has often precluded field identification [of questionable species of sharks observed]. Now, more than a hundred species of sharks will be easy to identify by use of the concise descriptions and accurate, detailed drawings in this handy guide. Included are all species reported within 500 nautical miles of the shores of the U.S. and Canada and a few deep-water species from adjacent areas. This. guide provides for each species an illustration[all skillfully rendered by D. Bryan Stone III] and summaries of diagnostic characteristics, similar species, geographic range, biology, reproduction, uses by man, and fishing methods. An illustrated key to the families of sharks, family descriptions, and species identification keys make even difficult field identifications possible. . The book includes a general account of sharks: their evolution, anatomy, reproduction, distribution, and economic uses. . The book is further enhanced by [17] beautiful color photographs by well-known underwater photographers". Get the picture? If you're into sharks(or know someone, of any age, who is), give this offering some serious consideration, Reader. Includes also Table of Contents, List of Color Plates, a voluminous Bibliography(over 11 pages worth), an Appendix(includes families consisting of one, lone species, specifically, the Goblin Shark, and the Megamouth Shark), and Index. Thanks very much!.
