Presentation Copy, one of only two such, with additional printed leaf bound at beginning with arms of Cambridge University and dedication 'Presented to the Chancellor of the University of Cambridge H.R.H. the Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh by the Masters and Scholars of the University of Cambridge as a mark of their appreciation of his first ten years as Chancellor'. Bound by Desmond Shaw in full, light blue morocco with the Cambridge University arms in gilt to the upper cover, gilt-lettered spine, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, with a marbled protective paper wrapper with gilt-lettered morocco spine label. Quarto. pp.viii, 747, [1 blank]. Housed in a protective slipcase made by Christopher Shaw, bookbinder. The present copy is the 'twin' of the one donated to H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to mark the tenth anniversary of his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, retained by the binder Desmond Shaw, whose name appears on the turn-in to the lower board ('Desmond Shaw Cambridge 1987'). Prince Philip served as Chancellor between 1976 and 2011. 'Darwin's notebooks provide an invaluable record of his scientific thinking and, most importantly, the development of his theory of natural selection.
