He was well educated, and followed the Pharisaic form of Judaism. In 64 he visited Rome as a member of a Jewish embassy. Although Josephus claimed to have advised against armed revolt against the Romans during the Jewish revolt (A.D. 66~70) he commanded a Jewish force in Galilee with some success. Besieged at Jotapata, he was captured by the Romans, and then devoted his energies to helping the Romans and trying to persuade the remaining Jews to come to terms. After the end of the Jewish revolt, he went to Rome with Titus, and lived there until his death about A.D. 100. Josephus became a close friend of the Emperors Vespasian and Titus, and took their family name, Flavius. Josephus did all his writing at Rome. His works included The Jewish Wars and The Antiquities of the Jews (which tells the story of the Jews from creation to the fall of Masada), Against Apion, which defended Jews against pagan slanders, and a short autobiography. Josephus wrote both to justify his own conduct and to commend what was most attractive in Judaism to the Romans. He condemned the Zealots vitriolically and praised his patrons Vespasian and Titus in glowing terms. Apart from this, Josephus gives much extremely valuable information about the period from the Maccabean revolt onwards. We depend on Josephus for most of our knowledge of the New Testament background. He has short, specific references to Jesus, John the Baptist and James, the brother of Jesus. Josephus is a rather wordy writer but generally reliable.
