Item Description: Over 70 items; nearly every book is is first edition in dust jacket, generally in very good to fine (some exceptionally so) condition. A detailed descriptive list is available upon serious inquiry. Whistler was killed in action in Normandy a few days after D-Day, and even though he died at the relatively young age of 39, he had already enjoyed a popular and prolific career. His style is often classified as ÒBaroque Revival,Ó an inadequate term at best. Certainly not a modernist, his illustrations might even edge into fantasy in the sense that they often evoke a bucolic, romantic, antique and classical elegance that existed primarily in wistful memory and movies. Even so, his imaginings generally avoid the most saccharine nostalgia, and often reveal a wry, satiric, and often grotesque sensibility. Bookseller Inventory # 30410

Item Description: Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1876-1887, 1887. First Editions; complete in 37 volumes; original black cloth decorated in red (first 14 titles); original green cloth decorated in black (next 12 titles); original brown cloth decorated in black (final 11 titles); all with gilt title bands on the spines. and in fine or near fine condition. Thomas Niles of Roberts Brothers conceived the idea of publishing books with "no name" of the author provided. A contemporary ad announced the series: "These novels are to be written by eminent authors, and in each case the authorship of the work is to remain an unviolable secret. No name will help the novel, or story, to success. Its success will depend solely on the writer's ability to catch and retain the reader's interest." Over the years the authorship of most of the volumes has been discovered, about 30 of the 37 books of which were by women. The best-known of these publications is A Masque of Poets, which prints the poetry of Celia Thaxter, Christina Rossetti, Louisa May Alcott, Lowell, Thoreau, and most importantly Emily Dickinson, whose poem ÒSuccessÓ appears, the only poem of hers to see publication in her lifetime. A second famous volume is Louisa May AlcottÕs A Modern Mephistopheles, a somewhat darker work than she is known for. A third is J.T. TrowbridgeÕs A Great Match, a baseball fiction incunable. This series was assembled over a twenty-four year period by our colleague Rick Loomis (Sumner & Stillman), and is a remarkable achievement. While complete sets might exist somewhere, weÕve never seen one, and certainly have never seen one for sale. The three titles mentioned, given their renown and value, are the easiest to find; some of the others are so obscure and elusive as to defy diligent efforts to acquire them. Item Description: Mostly from the thirties to the fifties, covering a variety of topics. Among the most exceptional of these is a two page holograph letter of Judy Holliday regarding the ruining of her career in the McCarthy era, Ò.When I came back to L.A., all hell.broke loose. The problem we were discussing that night reared up all over again & twice as violently. I can no longer work on radio or television.future movies look as if they will be paid off and not done.IÕd still like to discuss the script, but I guess it would be a theoretical discussion unless my boss, Mr. Cohen decides to be brave.Ó There are a couple of Pete Seeger letters and an excellent, long two-page typed letter signed from Alan Lomax. Four typed and signed Kurt Weill letters partly concern a song he wrote with MacLeish (with one letter he sends a copy of the music), and discuss a proposed collaboration with Corwin on a play, Ò.What I have in mind is to translate the lose [sic] form of entertainment which you have created for the radio into the terms of the musical theatre.Ó Artist and writer Rockwell Kent begs Corwin to spend the summer at his house upstate, touching briefly on politics. Four letters are from dancer Ted Shawn (one holograph letter to a mutual friend about Corwin), and there is additional correspondence with Howard Fast, Rabbi Stephen Wise, Carl Laemmle (turning him down for a job in 1931); a one page typed letter signed from Nelson Algren submits a two page poem carbon ts. (signed on each page). James Cagney writes Corwin (typed and signed ÒJimÓ) in 1942, ÒJudge Ben Lindsey wrote me asking for a copy of the broadcast. If you will please send one on here I will see that the old guy gets it. If he does, it will be the first time he has ever had an answer from anybody in the movies or radio. HeÕs sore as hell at us, so letÕs cool him off.Ó E.B. White, in a signed one page typed letter (1980), writes, ÒMany thanks for letting me see that fine piece on Sid Perelman. I am happy to find myself in it, here and there. I am glad you used that line about the cow --- a Holbein. It is Perelman at the top of his form, and higher you canÕt get.Ó There are a few other miscellaneous pieces, including a Wilder postcard and a typed letter of Admiral Byrd, apparently to CorwinÕs associates. Item Description: Cuba, 1853-1861. Folio (28.2 x 23.4 cm). Contemporary black pictorial leather with gilt ornaments and beautiful mother-of-pearl inlays. All edges gilt.* With six very early original photographs (Albumen) of Cuba (most ca. 24.5 x 19 cm; one 23 x 17 cm) mounted on leaves, with pastoral scenes involving people and horses, water, and trees: a unique view of Cuban rural life in the 1850's. Other leaves contain hand-written poetry, prose, and music, in Spanish or in English, by different people and variously dated. The majority written either in Matanzas, Cuba or Bremen, Germany. The concept of the "liber amicorum" originated from Germany and this is a particularly nice and important example. Apparently either Mrs. Traub originated in Bremen and went with her husband to Cuba, or she was Spanish or Cuban and married Mr. Traub. There remains the possibility that she was the daughter of a German gentleman and Cuban mother, hence the Spanish name Dolores, although it could have been a replacement for an originally German first name. Cuba, then still a Spanish possession was very important for its sugar cane, and rum industry and extensive trading was done between Cuba, Spain, North America and Europe, including the harbour town of Bremen. Many German's, including for instance the zoologists and botanists Louis Pfeiffer and "Juan" Gundlach (born Johannes Christoph) visited Cuba and stayed there for considerable periods of time. The Traubs must have been part of extensive social circles given the fact that this liber amicorum contains works in both Spanish and English. Several leaves are left blank. Front flyleaf a bit creased, most photographic plates a bit faded, otherwise in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 62435

'The New Naturalist leatherbound editions remain something of a secret known only to fans of the series'.'40 skilled steps undertaken to create a valuable book that will endure for over 100 years.'.[Edited Selection].'Then we move on to the leather. We buy Nigerian goatskin leather. We find that goatskin is hard wearing has a beautiful grain and feels and smells as proper leather should. A leather bound book is not just about its contents but is a beautiful object in its own right . When taken in the hand, one's sense of touch, smell and sight are engaged by what a leather brings to a book. The leather is hand picked by the British Tannery on regular buying trips to Nigeria. All the goats that it comes from are free range and the staple farm animal of Nigerian agriculture. They come to the UK and go to our tannery in Northamptonshire who dye the leather with dyes to achieve the rich dark brown. They are shipped to us and we inspect every skin before cutting panels out to ensure no natural faults are going to unduly effect the look of the book. Every skin is slightly different so each book is unique but very similar to the others in the series. The Panels are then cut from the leather and the panels are then skived down (thinned) to get the leather to a thickness the binding process can take place. We than "pare" the edges of the leather, paring is thinning the leather again on the back of the panel around the edges of the panel about 1 cm wide. This is Vital to achieve neat cases which are the hard back element of the book. Once this is done we then glue out the leather and apply the two grey boards and turn in all 4 edges. We have now made a case. We then create raised bands . These are the bumps on the spine which originally were created from the sewing process in early books. Nowadays we create raised bands for decoration rather than necessity. This we do by cutting very narrow strips of leather to the width of the book and glue them in specific uniform parts of the case. We then commence blocking or embossing the case. The Front of NN books has the NN blind embossed on to the front cover and lines either side of the raised bands. If you look carefully you can see the leather darkens with the application of heat and pressure. We make a "die" from art work which we apply heavy pressure and heat in which to achieve what we call blind embossing. The gold "blocking is then applied to the s. Bookseller Inventory # 000354

Item Description: 1896. The 50 items described below are part of what The Times (4 March 1896) described as 'the paper warfare' surrounding the Oxford University vote, on 3 and 10 March 1896, on the admission of women to the B.A. degree, a controversy which left the Oxford air, according to the Spectator (7 March 1896 ), 'thick with fly-leaves', and which drew from C. L. Dodgson ('Lewis Carroll') one of his few speeches in Congregation (on the 'anti' side). (Dodgson's pamphlet on the question, Resident Women-Students (1896), is offered separately.) The 1896 vote was, as Vera Brittain points out in her Women at Oxford (1960), the second of 'six memorable struggles which marked the relationship of women students to Oxford University', the others occurring in 1884, 1910, 1920, 1927, and 1948.Almost all of the items in the collection are excessively scarce. The only copies of 43 of the 50 found on COPAC and OCLC WorldCat are at Oxford, with no copies found of another three (7, 8 and 21). The collection derives from the Board of Education Reference Library, and all 50 have manuscript shelfmarks, and punch holes to corners for gathering the collection in a bundle. Item 16 carries the Board's red and white Library label, and Item 21 its stamp. Six of the items (2, 14, 26, 27, 40, 49) have the ownership inscription of Martin Holdich Green (1849-1927; see obituary, Times, 12 November 1927), last Life Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and two (9 and 22) are marked 'Miss '. A handful of the items (including two of the largest, 16 and 34) show particular signs of wear, but the overall condition is fair, with items lightly aged and worn.A number of notable individuals contribute, on both sides of the debate. ). Of particular interest is the exchange between Professor Thomas Case (1844-1925) of Magdalen, and Thomas Hodge Grose (1845-1906) of Queen's College, from 1897 University Registrar, with Grose accusing Case of being 'the Oxford Cassandra. For years he has poured his melancholy wail. But the University survives.' (19) Other contributors include: Sir William Reynell Anson (1843-1914), Vice-Chancellor, 1898-1899; Reginald Walter Macan (1848-1901), from 1906 Master of University College; the historians Charles Harding Firth (1857-1936), at the time lecturer at Pembroke, Henry Francis Pelham (1846-1907), Camden Professor of Ancient History, and Arthur Henry Johnson (1845-1927); Joseph Wells (1855-1929), Warden of Wadham, 1913-1927, and Vice-Chancellor, 1923-1926; James Franck Bright (1832-1920), Master of University College; the archaeologist Professor Percy Gardner (1846-1937); James Leigh Strachan-Davidson (1843-1916), from 1907 Master of Balliol; Arthur Sidgwick (1840-1920); Henry Offley Wakeman (1852-1899). Four women contribute: Bertha J. Johnson (26); Agnes C. Maitland (1850-1906), Principal of Somerville (31); Annie Mary Anne Henley Rogers (1856-1937) (39); and Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick (1845-1936), Principal of Newnham, sister of prime minister Arthur Balfour (41, a particularly impressive contribution). The extracts given in the descriptions below will give an indication of the passions aroused by the question. According to Brittain, a correspondent in the Oxford Gazette would later refer to 'the great fight of 1896, when Oxford was flooded with literature and The Times with letters', and the following references to features in The Times back up that claim: 5 February, 6 February (letter by Annie M. A. H. Rogers, Hon. Sec. to the Association for Promoting the Education of Women in Oxford), 7 February (letter by Henry Palin Gurney), 11 February (letters by Percy Gardner, A. Sidgwick of Corpus, and Bertha J. Johnson), 15 February, 20 February (letter by Agnes C. Maitland, Principal of Somerville), 22 February (letters by Thomas Case and Emily Davies, Hon. Secretary of Girton), 25 February (letters by M. E. Bishop and Alfred Marshall), 26 February (letters by Edward Caird and Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick), 29 February (letters by H M. Jones and Florence Gadesde. Bookseller Inventory # 14990

Item Description: Cambridge University / The Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 1910. Hard Cover - Leather. Book Condition: Fair to Very Good. Eleventh Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. ** ELEVENTH EDITION - 1910 ** WITH RARE ORIGINAL ARTS AND CRAFTS BOOKCASE ** LEATHER BOUND ** COMPLETE SET 29 VOLUMES ** PLUS 3 VOLUME "NEW EDITION" IN ITS OWN CASE ** NOTE: Photos accessed with this listing are of the actual books and bookcase you will be sent; please examine them closely as they provide the best indication of condition. A rare opportunity to own the famous 11th Edition of the Britannica in a special limited edition bookcase that was designed and made for a select few of these sets. The bookcase is in remarkable condition, complete and intact and showing few signs of any use or age, with no significant flaws or damage, or even any serious scratching present (the right edge of one shelf is cracked, not noticeable, could likely be easily repaired). Included is the matching headpiece case for the 3-volume "New Edition", issued in 1922 as an update supplement, that is intended to sit neatly on top of the original bookcase (as shown in the photos). The main body of the bookcase is 13.5 inches across (wider at the top and bottom). It stands 5 feet tall with the headpiece. Books are in flexible leather (light brown suede) bindings. All exterior page edges are gilt. All 32 volumes are present and are complete, exteriors in varying conditions. For obvious reasons, the spines are in worse condition than are the books themselves, and for some reason the condition of the spines becomes worse as you move down the bookcase. The spines nearer the floor are in the poorest condition. A number of the boards are detached, but all boards are present and complete. Because they were protected, many of the boards are in Very Good or better condition, in or near the condition of the volume shown in the photos. All pages present, none missing, each book complete, internally clean and unmarked. We will arrange and pay for shipping. Buy with confidence, professional booksellers for 35 years, selling online since 1995. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # AB4678
