Item Description: the author, son and heirs of J.A. Endters, 17081714, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Leipzig, 1708. 8 parts plus 6 appendices in 2 volumes. Folio. Contemporary richly blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, red edges. With 6 engraved allegorical frontispieces with garden scenes, 2 letterpress title-pages in red and black, 2 half-titles, 4 engraved part-titles, a letterpress part-title to the last appendix in vol. I, drop titles to parts 2-4 and 4 appendices in vol. I, 235 other engraved plates by the finest German artists and engravers (8 double-page & 13 larger folding) with views, plans, architecture, gardens, fruits, flowers, etc., 25 engravings in the text, and woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and initial letters, many also with fruit motifs. In total 114 (of 117) plates in vol. I and 132 (of 134) in vol. II. [8], 255, [1 blank], [7], [1 blank], 17 pp.; [21], 1-161, 162a-b, 163-175, 176a-b, 177-226, 227a-b, 228-239, [2] ll. including most of the vol. II plates. First edition, with astonishingly beautiful illustrations of citrus fruits, flowers, exotic plants, landscapes, cities, villages, palaces, gardens and garden art (including sundials and an obelisk with Egyptian heiroglyphs), as well as garden, building and city plans, labyrinths, etc. Most of the plates show a large illustration of a fruit (or less often a flower) above a small view of the garden, village, city or region where it is found, resulting in frequently surreal effects reminiscent of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach. Many include people engaged in various activities, and some of the botanical illustrations also include insects, spiders, birds, etc., including pests that damage the fruits: "delightful views of the gardens and palaces of Germany, Austria and Italy" (Blunt); "engraving as fine as this is not really improved by colour" (Raphael); "the vignettes and tailpieces . are so attractive that they have often been borrowed to decorate later books" (Raphael). The fruits and flowers are masterpieces of botanical art, the views are of the utmost importance for their detailed depictions of Germany, Austria and Italy ca. 1700, and the frontispieces are also among the finest of their kind. Many were drawn by the author and his brother, 14 are signed by Paul Decker the elder (1677-1713) and others by his son of the same name, J.C. Steinberger, Joseph à Montalegre and several others. Parts 2 to 4 bear the same titles in both volumes: "Aegle," "Arethusa" and "Hesperthusa," while vol. I adds "Flora Noribergensis," "Zugab etlicher anderer rarer Gewächse" and the accounts of sundials and of the obelisk, and vol. II the "Beschreibung etlicher fremden Gewächase" with plates of pineapples, date palms, dragon palm, coconut and cotton, including views of America, the Middle East and India.Volkamer (1644-1720), was the son of a physician, botanist and gardener who had studied at Padua. In the 1660s he visited the gardens of Italy, where he took a special interest in citrus fruits. On his return he continued to collect citrus plants and spent several decades preparing and collecting drawings for the present book. He was clearly influenced by Ferrari's 1646 Hesperides, but shows far more species with much finer plates and broadens the book's scope with the magnificent views and plans.Contemporary owner's inscription of Franciscus Josephus Jurziczeck on both title-pages. The plates in vol. I are numbered according to the facing pages (with a, b, etc., when necessary), while most of those in vol. II have folio numbers in the same sequence as the text leaves, but those in the preliminaries are numbered I-VIII (preceded by the frontispiece). The total number varies from copy to copy, but no copy appears to have more than 117 in vol. I and 134 in vol. II (including frontispieces and part-titles: Raphael apparently errs in reporting 1 more in vol. II). Lacks 5 plates: vol. I, nos. 172b-d, and vol. II, nos. 185 & 232 [bis]; with two leaves browned, a tear slightly affecting 1 plate, and occasional minor spots or marginal water stains; fastenings of bindings lacking. Attrac.
