Item Description: [Sherman Oaks, California Ninja Press, 1995]., 1995. "One of my favorites among her books is her edition of W.S. Merwin's long poem, The Real World of Manuel Córdova, finished in 1995. It is a poem about a river, printed as a river, so it becomes the map of a river, on paper that ripples like a river and is as richly colored as water gorged with red Amazonian mud. It is river of words and a map of the mind, but it is also, first and last, a book, and so the sheet, 15 feet long, folds into something as compact as a Javanese or Tibetan sutra" (Robert Bringhurst in The Art of the Book in California: Five Contemporary Presses). This single, long poem by W. S. Merwin was inspired by events in the life of Manuel Córdova-Rios; extraordinary events that took place deep in the forest at the headwaters of the Amazon River in 1907. Printed in hand set Samson Uncial on kakishibu, a persimmon-washed and smoked handmade paper from the Fuji Paper Mills Cooperative in Tokushima, Japan. The accordion-style book may be read in hand, stanza by stanza, or opened entirely to reveal all forty-three, fourteen-line stanzas. Fully extended, the book is fifteen feet long. The image of a river undulates alongside the poem while the setting of the poem itself mirrors the serpentine meanders of the river. The river is printed from photopolymer plates in five colors gradually intermingling one after another. The bookÕs enclosure is a heavy cream-colored raw flax sheet, handmade at the Center For the Book Papermaking Facility at the University of Iowa. The enclosure is lined with kakishibu on which is printed a map of the world, the first to show the worldÕs currents, drawn by Athanasius Kircher in 1665. The map is hand-tinted with pencil in five colors echoing the colors of the river. The enclosure is fastened with alum-tawed goat skin and bone. Both book and enclosure are housed in an acrylic slipcase. Fine. One of 160 signed and numbered copies in the edition along with 18 lettered hors commerce. 3.5 inches by 13.25 inches. Opens to 15 feet. 47 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 15943

Item Description: Mallorca, Spain, 1953. Letter. Book Condition: Near Fine. Two very early one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED by Merwin, one dated 19 January 1953 and the other 4 December, likely in 1952, the year his first book was published. Both letters are addressed to W. Price Turner of Scotland, editor of THE POET magazine. In the earlier letter, Merwin submits poems [not present] for the Winter issue and briefly discusses "the unfortunate incompetence of the Spanish postal system." In the later and lengthier letter, Merwin thanks Turner for a letter and a copy of his magazine. In part: "It is extremely heartening, ever, to find a native of the British isles who is aware that American poetry does exist. Who, if I'm not being impertinent, and for my own amusement, was the 'overpraised poet' who so happily remarked that it didn't? . Oxford University Press has imported 'a limited number' of copies of A MASK FOR JANUS [Merwin's first book] (whatever that means) at a horrifying price -- 16s. Which I suppose effectively renders it invalid in England, whether or not anything else did." Two fine and very early letters by Merwin, with one envelope addressed by the poet to Turner in Glasgow, "Escocia (Inglaterra)," with interesting content about his early work.
