The foundational 1914 edition of this children's reader, the basic text and structure of the primer that publisher Scott, Foresman would later revise to incorporate their Dick and Jane characters into. The Elson readers were already an established series before Zerna Sharp conceived of the characters of Dick and Jane. By the time of their first appearance in 1930, the Elson readers in which they debuted had undergone a number of revisions. In 1927, Elson revised its THE ELSON PUPIL'S HAND CHART (1921) and renamed it THE ELSON BASIC READERS PRE-PRIMER; similarly, the longer reader was a revision of the 1920 and 1927 ELSON READERS, PRIMER; which were themselves revisions of this, the 1914 ELSON-RUNKEL PRIMER. An important literary ancestor of Dick and Jane. 7.25'' x 5'''. Original brown pictorial cloth. Illustrated with color vignettes throughout by H.O. Kennedy, Henry Thiede, Lauren Stout, and R.F. James. 128 pages. Boards with moderate soil, some rubbing. Interior with a few spots of fingersoil, faint marginal toning.
