First edition. Small octavo. Frontispiece portrait, 304 pp. Publisher's flag-like binding in red, green and white, gray cover and spine lettering. Small amount of rubbing and owner's small pen signature on front pastedown., else a very good copy of this scarce title. The author is the son of the world famous detective and union-buster Allan Pinkerton and it consists of a collection of short stories detailing the the author's personal experiences working on the railroad, and provides a glimpse into the unique and often dangerous world of railroad workers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The stories cover a wide range of topics, from the everyday challenges of working on the tracks to the more dramatic events that occurred during Pinkerton's time on the job, including train wrecks, robberies, and other incidents. Not too long after this publication the automobile became the most common mode of transportation.
