Item Description: PUTNAM, NEW YORK, 1959. HARD BACK TAN. Book Condition: GOOD. Dust Jacket Condition: GOOD DJ. FIRST ED. 6 X 8. Signed by Meredith on front endpaper; plastic covered d/j; music man; story about Meredith and Rini Wilson's meeting and marriage, includes various events in their life including the development of the hit broadway musical "The Music Man" Meredith Willsonís own story of the original production of the classic musical The Music Man for which he pulled off the trifecta, writing the music, lyrics and book, something almost unheard of in the Broadway musical stage. Tells the whole story, from the creation of the plot based on Willsonís Iowa childhood (originally, the stuttering child Winthrop was going to be severely handicapped), the signing on of the production team, the casting of Robert Preston (until then, known only as a heavy in B pictures) as Harold Hill, production difficulties and the triumphant opening night. This is perhaps the rarest and most prized Broadway musical memoirs. DATE PUBLISHED: 1959 EDITION: FIRST ED 190. Bookseller Inventory # 037429

ETCHINGS (titles given in justification): with wide borders, laid-in with protective interleaves in the lavender gray front pocket mounted on the front pastedown, the etchings signed in full, in bold fluid script, dated 83 and numbered 6/150. Sign in the Sky" (Etching I) fuses time and place in a manner characteristic of Grass' aesthetic and "Fairytale" (Etching II) is one of Günter Grass' admired flounder works. "Long before I wrote the story of the flounder as a novel, I was depicting the great flatfish with a brush, a quill, charcoal and soft lead" [Grass, p. 158; Friedman, "The Writer's Brush"]. Condition: Etching I: Pristine. Etching II: Fine+, a miniscule spot in bottom margin. Publisher's Pocket: As new. Protective Interleaves: Excellent. Size: Etching I: Sheet: 371 x 297 mm. Plate: 244 x 195 mm. Etching II: Sheet: 297 x 376 mm. Plate: 166 x 242 mm. BOOK CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: Clean: Front endpaper with creased top corner with 8 mm closed tear: last three leaves with faint top corner fingering. Otherwise, pages crisp and fresh. Boards: clean and bright, upper side with top edge ding. Binding: fine. Jacket: Tight fitting slipcase has caused wear with top edge of jacket with a 3.9 cm abrasion rub with slight loss near top outer corner, light wear to spine edges, and trace wear to crown and top corner of rear flap fold-over. Slipcase: scoring: infrequent scattered ink & soil spots. SUMMARY: The theme of the anthology is that Günter Grass' writing and his art are intrinsically intertwined. Grass found in his graphic art a means of drawing on his 'muses' that reciprocally fed and enriched his writing, what Drucker calls; "a dual muse". After WWII, Grass trained as a stonemason and studied sculpture. While he came to be identified as a writer, Grass continued to devote substantial time to drawing and sculpture and began making etchings in 1972 and lithographs in 1975. Dreher states in his foreword, "For Grass, black is the sum of all colors". In 1983 John Russell wrote about his etchings, "Grass' intentions are best served by the etching needle, for the rich opportunities it provides for exploring the synergies of black & white". Influenced by early German graphic art, including Dürer and Surrealist experiments with the unconscious mind, Grass' best work as represented here, is vital and affecting and carries us into the currents of the unconscious. Because of his eminence as a writer, Grass's visual art is often denigrated. Although his failure rate is high and the apex of his achievement doesn't compare to great artists, Grass at his best is fascinating, pursuing fabulist themes and strategies identified with his writing and an iconography that draws on his Baltic Sea upbringing in Danzig. PAGINATION: Confirmed complete, 136 pages with poems and text excerpts selected from 13 Grass works, the informative afterword essay on changes in Grass' graphic style, pp. 122-129; illustrated with 87 Grass drawings, one in color, with many reproduced in facsimile and most previously unpublished, the works made using a great variety of media, including chalk, reed pen & wash, brushes, charcoal, pens & inks, pencil, and a pigeon quill, works in a chronological lay-out, sources and lists of at rear. FORMAT: Folio, with publisher's woven silver cloth boards with black letters in its sewn binding, b/w pictorial cream book-jacket, reproducing on the upper side the pencil drawing, "Arrow-Swift Snail" (1972), and plain card slipcase. SIZE: 322 x 405 mm (12.68 x 15.94 inches). REFERENCE: Cambridge Companion to Günter Grass, Part XII, Richard Schade, "Günter Grass and art". Item Description: G.P. Putnam's Sons (c.1959), New York, 1959. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. First Edition. [beautiful copy, no discernible wear to book at all; jacket has a couple of tiny smudges on the spine, very light soiling to rear panel, a superior example of this wear-prone jacket]. SIGNED by both Meredith Willson and his wife Rini on the ffep. The last of the author's three memoirs, this one dealing entirely with the creation of his most beloved work, "The Music Man." It's more than just a behind-the-scenes-in-the-theatre story, though, as the author explains in the rear jacket blurb: "This is a love story, but because it's about a husband and wife -- Rini and me -- the book stores can't put it with the love stories. Certain people find the book amusing (sample comment from Cousin Phil: 'It's kind of humorous, what there is of it, and there's quite a lot of it too, such as it is'), but they can't put it with the humor books because there's some pretty good suspense in here [ etc.]." It's Willson's own story of "how together we lived through the events leading up to our watching our only child -- a Broadway musical comedy called The Music Man -- come out onto the New York stage in front of God and everybody, make its bow and speak its piece." Maybe the best memoir (certainly one of the funniest) ever written about the creation of a Broadway show -- one of the most popular and enduring Broadway shows, to boot, a gen-u-wine American classic.
