Washington, DC: Naval Research Laboratory, 1955. 263 x 202 mm. Original printed stiff wrappers, cloth backstrip, minor dampstain on front cover, ownership signature. Together 3 items. Very good to fine. Extremely Rare Group of Materials Documenting the Record-Breaking Flight of the Viking 11 Rocket and the Spectacular High-Altitude Pictures of Earth Taken During the Flight. These materials include a carbon typescript of Baumann and Winkler’s text (not including the "Future Program" and "Acknowledgement" sections at the end, which likely had not yet been written), the original photographic prints and diagrams used for their report, an early published version of the report illustrated with photographic prints, and a later version illustrated with halftones. Baumann and Winkler’s report is extremely rare, with only one copy recorded in OCLC (Stanford University). On May 24, 1954, the Naval Research Laboratory launched the Viking 11 rocket from White Sands, New Mexico. The rocket rose to 158.4 miles above the Earth—an altitude record for a Western single-stage rocket up to that time—and the camera mounted to the rocket recorded spectacular images of the Earth from the threshold of outer space. "Viking 11 broke the photographic altitude record on May 7, 1954, when it carried a fifteen-pound K-24 aircraft camera to 158 miles. Two basic kinds of pictures were taken by that rocket as it climbed straight up and then started to tumble back down. Most showed the terrain below in splendid detail. One, taken at the top of the trajectory, clearly showed El Paso, Las Cruces, the Rio Grande, and three railroad lines, all spread out beneath cotton-puff clouds whose shadows dappled the desert floor. "Others, taken obliquely, captured terrain and clouds extending all the way to a gently curved horizon more than a thousand miles away. Two of the pictures, fitted together as a composite, made a portrait of sixty degrees of horizon southeast of White Sands. It showed a 1,036-mile-long crescent at the end of 600,000 square miles of parched land and, beyond, a mottled blanket of languid white vapor covering the Gulf of Mexico. Above the horizon, out beyond Earth’s marvelously crisp edge, there was the stark blackness of deep space" (Burrows, This New Ocean: The Story of the First Space Age, p. 135). The rocket on which the camera was mounted was the eleventh in the series of twelve Viking rockets built and flown by the U. S. Navy between 1949 and 1955. The Viking rockets were the first large liquid-fueled rockets developed in the United States; they were intended to impr. Bookseller Inventory # 43007

Item Description: Verein für Raumschiffahrt 1. Jahrgang 1927., Breslau, 1927. Octavo, 6 issues plus the supplement; paged [i] ii-iv [1] 2-28; [81] 82-172, illustrations, pictorial self wrappers, bound together in a plain green paper wrapper titled in ink on front cover. The first six issues of this rocketry journal, 15 Juli-15 Dezember 1927, plus the Januar-Juni 1927 Ergänzungsheft. Among the signed articles published in these issues are contributions by Hans Grimm and Hermann Oberth, but the majority are by Max Valier. The Juli-Dezember issues contain the first printing of "Die Fahrt ins All. Eine kosmische Phantasie," a six-part science fiction story by Valier, later published separately in book form as AUF KÜHNER FAHRT ZUM MARS. EINE KOSMISCHE PHANTASIE (1927). "The Society for Space Ship Travel, or Verien für Raumschiffahrt -- the VfR, and afterwards more popularly called the German Rocket Society -- was born on July 5, 1927" (Winter, p. 35). DIE RAKETE is commonly considered to be the first rocket journal but, in fact, it "had a predecessor, a magazine printed six months before the VfR came into being, the DEUTSCHE JUGEND-ZEITUNG (German Youth Journal). The lead article was, interestingly, 'Der Flug zum Monde, seine astronmischen und technischen Grundlagen' ('The Flight to the Moon, its Astronomical Basis'). The fourth issue contained a subtitle change: 'VEREINIGT MIT DER ZEITSCHRIFT "DIE RAKETE"' (Combined with the journal "Die Rakete"). The journal ceased publication shortly thereafter" (Winter, p. 37). When the VfR was founded a new DIE RAKETE appeared, with page numbering continued from the earlier journal, a technical supplement to it, and an index to the contents of both journals (pages 3-4 of the preliminaries). Winter, Prelude to the Space Age. The Rocket Societies: 1924-1940, pp. 35, 37. Spine tanned, all issues are in fine condition. All these early issues are rare and are seldom offered for sale. In a lovely clamshell box. (#135570). Bookseller Inventory # 135570

Machines, p.27 - 3* "The Leyden jar with experiments and theory; the identity of lightning and machine electricity discussed, p. 137." Wheeler - - Two great innovations marked the development of the study of electricity in the early part of the fifth decade of the 18th century. While both of them were contributions to practice rather than to theory, they stimulated theory by providing a complex variety of new phenomena to challenge concepts that were inadequate. The improved "electrical machines", or electrostatic generators, and the condenser, or "Leyden Jar", made it possible to produce electrical effects on a far larger scale than had ever before been possible, thus affording the means for making wholly new types of experiments and also spectacular public demonstrations which drew considerable attention to the subject of electricity. These innovations came chiefly from Germany and Holland. - - Johann Heinrich Winkler (1703-1770), professor at the University of Leipzig was the first to report on Kleist's experiments in the second volume. He disclosed Kleist's " device as a means for storing and delivering a very powerful electric Shock. Winkler improved the Kleist Jar by winding a chain around the bottle, leading it to a metal plate and thence to the prime conductor of his multiple-globe generator. The shock resulting from this equipment caused him convulsions, blood-agitation, and fever. Winkler was the first to use a fixed cushion in the electric machine for applying friction instead of the hand, and by many is believed to have been the first to suggest the use of conductors as a means of protection against lightning. - - "During the year 1746 Winckler made use of common electricity for telegraphic communications by the discharge of Leyden jars through very long circuits, in some of which the River Pleisse formed a part, and it may be added that Joseph Franz had previously discharged the contents of a jar through 1500 feet of iron wire while in the city of Vienna." P.F.

Cesare Medail. Firmato in basso a destra. Formato: China acquerellata su carta di cm 64x50. Buono, ordinari segni d’uso e del tempo. Bookseller Inventory # 64129
