Item Description: The Sun Dial Press, Garden City, NY, 1943. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. With Notes on Thomas Wolfe by Edward C. Aswell (his publisher) detailing heretofore unknown information about him and an important letter to his mother foreshadowing what was to come. With Selected Short Stories -- thought to be some of the finest Wolfe ever wrote. Clean and unmarked, tight and intact -- with dark green boards and black titles, lightly rubbed on the spine extremities. DJ is separated into 3 parts: front, back and front flap; black background is scuffed, but attractive, with a cut-out scene of distant hills and town. Published posthumously. "This book is printed from the plates of the original edition. The text is complete and unabridged. The low price [was] made possible by the elimination of original production costs and the author's acceptance of a reduced royalty." An eloquent, unique and powerful craftsman, Thomas Wolfe produced some of the most magnificent prose of all time. Thomas Clayton Wolfe (1900 - 1938) was a major American novelist of the early 20th century, who, in his short life, wrote four lengthy novels, plus many short stories, dramatic works and novellas. He is known for mixing highly original, poetic, rhapsodic, and impressionistic prose with autobiographical writing. His books, written and published from the 1920s to the 1940s, vividly reflect on American culture and mores of the period, albeit filtered through Wolfe's sensitive, sophisticated and hyper-analytical perspective. He became very famous during his own lifetime. After Wolfe's death of military tuberculosis of the brain, his chief contemporary William Faulkner said that Wolfe may have had the best talent of their generation. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book. Bookseller Inventory # 008257
