All of the legends pertain to the Sioux' traditional lore, to tales told around the campfire, to legends associated with places or mountains, and battle and hunting legends. Indian foods, dances, and songs are also included." Much of the material was narrated to Project members when the Indians were assembled for pow~wows, or at church meetings. There were separate meetings between the old and young men as well. Sidney Bean, a young college graduate, and Wilbur Bordeaux, prominent young French~Indian, visited the Yankton and Rosebud reservations to gather the legends from the very old chieftains. The entire number of legends are authentic and accurate. The Rosebud Sioux Tribal Council "go on record endorsing the said writings to the Federal Writers' Project of South Dakota."
