Item Description: 1922. First separate edition, reprinted from Izaak Walton League Monthly. Frontispiece Photographic portrait of the author holding his hat, his rod, and his bonefish, illustrated by Bessie Bethal Crank. [vi], [18] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. RARE ZANE GREY PAMPHLET. Privately printed Christmas greeting from Zane Grey, recounting how he and his brother came to fish at Long Key, and many of the characters he encountered. The book was issued in a very small edition, reprinting an article first published in the Izaak Walton League Monthly. William Dilg was a friend and correspondent of Zane Grey who founded the Izaak Walton League in 1922 as a conservation and angling group. Within the space of four years, and with the support of Zane Grey, Emerson Hough, Stewart Edward White, and other writers, Dilg had built it into an influential nationwide organization with more than 200,000 members and some 2,500 local chapters. In 1926, DIlg was ousted as president of the league amid some controversy. The Forest and Stream issue for June 1926 reports on the controversy and bears the headline "ZANE GREY Declares for WILL H. DILG" and includes an open letter from Grey stating that he had resigned from the League and giving his reasons for a call to resist the commercial interests that displaced Dilg, who served as League president and as editor of the monthly Magazine.A four-page Typed Letter, signed (Bill"), from Dilg to Zane Grey dated 2 August 1926, restates Dilg's complaint about the actions of the "Junta" and proposes a plan for action by Grey in support of Dilg and the interests of the league's members. The organization Dilg founded still exists and pursues conservation initiatives. The Bonefish Brigade is RARE, and the present copy is inscribed by the editor who founded the Izaak Walton League and commissioned the piece, with a notable letter pleading for Grey's support. Not in Bruns or Sheets; Myers, E. and J.: A Bibliographical Check List And Price Guide For The Writings Of R.C. Grey, Romer Grey and Zane Grey, p. 24; Heller 2:841 Printed grey wrappers, printed in green and red "Christmas Greetings" upper left and a candle lower right. Fine copy, with ink note across front cover "With the best of good wishes for the best of good fishes Mr & Mrs. Will. H. Dilg". Item Description: 1908. First Edition. GREY, Zane. The Last of the Plainsmen. New York: Outing, 1908. Octavo, original gilt-stamped pictorial green cloth, uncut. $4500.First edition, illustrated with 26 black-and-white photographic plates, presentation copy inscribed by the book's subject: "With compliments of 'The Last of the Plainsmen', C.J. Jones" and by the author: "And the author Zane Grey."A young dentist more passionate about fishing trips than fixing teeth, Grey in 1907 met "one C.J. 'Buffalo' Jones, a former buffalo hunter who was attempting to breed 'cattalo'-a hybrid of buffalo and cattle-on his ranch near the Grand Canyon. Grey heard him speak at the Campfire Club in New York, and while most of the audience hooted at his implausible-sounding adventure stories, Grey believed him. Furthermore, he proposed to accompany Jones out West and write a book about his work. Jones agreed, and the planning commenced-until Grey saw how much the trip would cost, at which point he realized he couldn't afford it. But [his wife] Dolly. had the vision to see his potential. 'I've got a hunch that this trip to the West will be the turning point in your career,' she told him. The trip-during which he rode into the wilderness with some tough-minded Mormons, shot a mountain lion and drank in the landscape-sparked a lifelong obsession with the West. It also yielded The Last of the Plainsmen" (Samuel Hughes). During the western excursion recounted in these pages, "Grey discovered the trappers, hunters, miners and cowboys who were to become the heroes of most of his later fiction" (Lamar, 454). The trip thus "determined the subject matter of his most popular books for the next several years and ultimately helped determine what millions of Americans over several generations would choose for their reading material" (ANB). The Outing Publishing Company was "best known for its sports magazine with the same name, and few literary critics noticed its books. [but] sportsmen had enough respect for Outing's books that this work, when it was published, gained Grey a reputation as a daring and accomplished outdoorsman. Certainly Field and Stream thought so. [Its general manager Eltinge Warner] saw Grey as an upcoming writer whose unusual experiences and engaging style would attract new readers and boost subscriptions," and, on the strength of The Last of the Plainsmen, began commissioning work from Grey that would further establish him as a popular and profitable author (Pauly, 81-82). With four-pages of publisher's advertisements at rear; without extremely rare original dust jacket. Myers, 9. Old dealer description tipped onto rear pastedown endpaper.Interior fine; inner paper hinges expertly reinforced. Light rubbing to extremities of original cloth with light toning to spine and rear board. A near-fine presentation copy, scarce inscribed by both Jones and Grey. Signed.
