Item Description: n.p., christmas, 1922, 1922. Privately printed Christmas greeting from Zane Grey, recounting how he and his brother came to fish at Long Key, and many of the characters he encountered. The book was issued in a very small edition, reprinting an article first published in the Izaak Walton League Monthly. William Dilg was a friend and correspondent of Zane Grey who founded the Izaak Walton League in 1922 as a conservation and angling group. Within the space of four years, and with the support of Zane Grey, Emerson Hough, Stewart Edward White, and other writers, Dilg had built it into an influential nationwide organization with more than 200,000 members and some 2,500 local chapters. In 1926, DIlg was ousted as president of the league amid some controversy. The Forest and Stream issue for June 1926 reports on the controversy and bears the headline "ZANE GREY Declares for WILL H. DILG" and includes an open letter from Grey stating that he had resigned from the League and giving his reasons for a call to resist the commercial interests that displaced Dilg, who served as League president and as editor of the monthly Magazine. A four-page Typed Letter, signed (Bill"), from Dilg to Zane Grey dated 2 August 1926, restates Dilg's complaint about the actions of the "Junta" and proposes a plan for action by Grey in support of Dilg and the interests of the league's members. The organization Dilg founded still exists and pursues conservation initiatives. The Bonefish Brigade is RARE, and the present copy is inscribed by the editor who founded the Izaak Walton League and commissioned the piece, with a notable letter pleading for Grey's support First separate edition, reprinted from Izaak Walton League Monthly. 12mo. Frontispiece Photographic portrait of the author holding his hat, his rod, and his bonefish, illustrated by Bessie Bethal Crank. [vi], [18] pp. Printed grey wrappers, printed in green and red "Christmas Greetings" upper left and a candle lower right. Fine copy, with ink note across front cover "With the best of good wishes for the bets of good fishes Mr & Mrs. Will. H. Dilg". Custom blue half morocco dropbox. Not in Bruns or Sheets; Myers, E. and J.: A Bibliographical Check List And Price Guide For The Writings Of R.C. Grey, Romer Grey and Zane Grey, p. 24. Bookseller Inventory # 260490

Item Description: A poetic tribute to friendship, with information on his writings. "To Alan. I have never had a friend. I have always been a little afraid of you. because I liked you and was afraid you would soon see through me, and regarding me as an opaque, substanceless [sic] shadow, pass me by. I never thought of being different from my real self. I said, 'If he is ever to like me at all, it must be with bad and all!'" Grey notes that he never cared what anyone thought of him, but that he "did care what you thought." He refers to his wife, Dolly (Lina Roth): "She is a woman and thinks me a hero, and you are a man and know that I am not." He further elaborates on his meeting Alan and becoming his friend in a very romanticized manner: "Such glimpses as I have had myself in some gray sleepless morning hour. twilight lonesome. have bewildered and terrified me. I have seen a calm, deep, star-studded pool and I have seen a maelstrom. So here's to the day I blindly broke into your office, broke in when the world was dark. the day I broke in, to find a friend." And further, "What you said. is dearer to me than to see this lion-story with Harper's imprint [referring most likely to The "Last of the Plainsmen" which was not published by Harper's]." He talks of his "struggle against darkness" made light because "hope and faith are light." The letter concludes with details of his writing. "I have written seven chapters of The Last of the Plainsmen [published 1908] since I saw you. I don't know how good it is, but I'll gamble what the desert looks and feels like. the Grand Canyon. what Buffalo Jones was. simply telling the thing as reminiscence. But the story. has taken on a new life. I seem to have a different feeling for it. I've got the desert, and the forest. the wind. the sun, all right here with me." Signed, "Well, Banzai! Old Man - Yours Zane.". "The Last of the Plainsmen," was published in 1908 by Outing. Bookseller Inventory # 2574
