Second printing. 8vo, 328 pp. Zorita (ca. 1500 - 70) was a remarkable individual -- an upright, completely honest civil servant. He was first sent outy as oidor to Santo Domingo in 1544, then New Granada and Cartagena (now Colombia), and finally to Mexico, as member of the Audiencia, in 1553. When he finally retired and returned home to Spain, he was as poor as when he arrived. He was very sympathetic to the Indians, always trying to right the balance of power, which of course strongly favored the Spanish colonists. This book, preserved in manuscript at the monastery of San Francisco in Mexico City, was used by Clavijero and Boturini in their writings, as a source, but was itself not published til the 19th century, in a French translation. The dust jacket quotes from a review in the New Yorker: "As with the great works of social conscience -- and this book rivals Marx's Capital in its power -- the effect is produced not by the facts but by the imagery . Zorita's book is one of the essential documents of American history." Benjamin Keen did the translation and wrote an excellent introduction (77 pp.) which places Zorita in his context. Fine copy in like dust jacket.
