Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An excellent book about Chichester Cathedral, with 17 essays, 6 appendices, nearly 160 illustrations, 16 plans, and 27 colour plates, edited by Dr Mary Hobbs, who was the Cathedral Librarian. The book's purpose back in 1994 was to offer "a complete re-assessment, in the light of recent research, of the cathedral's growth, development and adornment; of the wealth of its art, liturgy, music, books and archives; of its colourful personalities through the ages; and of the relationship between the cathedra and the city - and its occasional emergence on the national scene". The book's printed on good quality paper and tightly bound inside burgundy boards showing only a few minimal signs of shelf wear. There's no markings to the text, it's in very good condition except for a little bit of faint creasing in one place along the edge of the first few pages, almost invisible but you can sense somebody has been looking with keen interest at the contents page and list of illustrations. The jacket is sunned in a strip down its back outer edge, and there's a crease across the bottom corner of the inner back flap, otherwise there are only a few minor marks of shelfwear and handling. From the library of the late Dr John Birch, who was the cathedral's organist and director of music, although without mark of ownership.
