Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Eldridge, Harold (illustrator). First Edition. Gift quality 1964 first edition hardcover in tan cloth covered boards with brown spine title and illustration of Isaac and Kate in the bushes. Spine ends and upper frt board tip are lightly bumped, no names, tears or soil in the 247 pp text. Hinges are fine, page block tight. Unclipped (and unpriced) dj is a professional reproduction that is complete showing negligible color loss at lower tips and foot of spine. This is the story of a mule and the boy she adopted. The mule was Old Kate, as weathered as the Kentucky hills she roamed, and the boy was Isaac, who met her one summer day and was never quite the same again. Kate was a 'thinking' mule, and a thinking mule spells trouble. For one thing, she chased rabbits and charged polecats as a matter of principle. She jumped fences, tried to climb trees, raided cornfields, and picked blackberries for snacks. She was fond of book learning, especially American history, and insisted upon following Isaac to school. She liked to wander around town at night and terrorized the whole community. And even wound up in jail (see image). In this engaging , often hilarous tale, Billy C. C.ark writes with feeling and warmth of a boy who lost his heart to a four-footed genius and took a long step on the path to manhood.
