Juni 1924 wurde der Serienmörder Friedrich 'Fritz' Haarmann in Hannover verhaftet. Er hatte seit 1918 nachweislich 24 junge Männer ermordet. Der als Polizeispitzel und Detektiv arbeitende Kaufmann war zwar geständig, bekannte sich aber nur zu 21 Morden und bestritt den Vorwurf, Teile der Leichen der Ermordeten verspeist zu haben. Seine Opfer lernte Haarmann im Bahnhofsmilieu kennen. Nachdem er sie in seine Wohnung gelockt hatte, durchbiss er ihnen die Kehle oder erwürgte sie. Haarmann war den Behörden zwar schon seit 1918 als Triebtäter bekannt, er konnte jedoch erst 1924 nach dem Fund mehrerer menschlicher Schädel in der Leine und durch den Einsatz von Kriminalinspektor Hermann Lange festgenommen werden. Der Fall um Haarmann wurde zum aufsehenerregendsten Kriminalfall seiner Zeit. Die genaue Zahl seiner Opfer konnte nie ermittelt werden, da Haarmann im Größenwahn und mit dem Ziel, den Ermittlern zu gefallen, auch Morde gestand, die er nie begangen hatte. Der Psychiater Ernst Schultze, der vor Haarmanns Hinrichtung am 15. April 1925 mehrere Wochen lang Gespräche mit ihm führte, schloss jedoch eine psychische Erkrankung aus. Matthias Blazek setzt neue Schwerpunkte in der Betrachtung des Falles Haarmann. Hier stehen weniger die Vorgeschichte und die Taten im Vordergrund als die Ereignisse seit Haarmanns Festsetzung. Zudem wertet Blazek erstmals den kompletten Presserummel um den 'Werwolf von Hannover' aus. Bislang unveröffentlichte Fotos sowie neue Erkenntnisse und Quellen werden angeführt, und auch bislang wenig beachtete Randnotizen werden einer Betrachtung unterzogen. Als Beispiel seien die Hintergründe zum Scharfrichter Carl Gröpler genannt, der die Fallschwertmaschine bediente, mit der Haarmann hingerichtet wurde, sowie der Aufenthalt Haarmanns in der Gefangenenarbeitsstelle Jägerheide bei Celle, die verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen Haarmanns und der Wiederaufnahmeprozess gegen Grans. Bisher in der Literatur widersprüchlich dargestellte Informationen werden nun auf Quellen basierend aufgearbeitet.
