Item Description: PHI Learning, 2011. Softcover. Book Condition: New. 3rd edition. 17 x 23 cm. This book offers a unique perspective on the history of economic thought. It emphasizes the competing visions and beliefs economists have had regarding how capitalism functions, and the resulting divergent theoretical frameworks they constructed. This third edition is more accessible to both undergraduate and postgraduate level courses with the placement of more formal presentations within appendices. The text also develops more fully the ideas of some of the early post-Keynesians, such as Joan Robinson, Nicholas Kaldor, and Roy Harrod, while the last three chapters are brought up-do-date by including the Great Recession of 2007?2009. Item Description: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2009. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. An Essay on the Principle of Population remains one of the most powerful statements on the limits to human hopes set by the tension between increasing population and limited means of existence. In this famous treatise, which transformed Malthus into an intellectual celebrity, he posited the hypothesis that population, if unchecked, increases at a geometric rate (i.e. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc.), whereas subsistence grows at an arithmetic rate (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.). Malthus s hypothesis implied that actual population always has a tendency to push above the food supply. Any attempt to ameliorate the condition of the lower classes by increasing their incomes or improving agricultural productivity would be fruitless, as the extra means of subsistence would be completely absorbed by an induced boost in population. As long as this tendency remains, Malthus argued, the perfectibility of society will always be out of reach. Malthus suggested that only natural causes like war, famine, pestilence, etc. could check excessive population growth. Modern demographers find Malthusian view of power of population highly pessimistic. However, the facts that the world population is increasing at a fast rate notwithstanding various family planning measures, and world food security is under serious threat bear testimony that Malthus s ideas are holding true even today. The book deeply analyses the views of earlier writers on the subject of population, like Godwin, Condorcet, Russel Wallace, Richard Price among others, challenges them and convincingly brings forth Malthus s hypotheses which have gained universal acceptance. It also contains an inculcating Introduction by K.R. Gupta, a well-known economist, which not only analyses Malthus s views but also studies many other factors like migration of population and problems related thereto, population ageing and the ideas of economists like Adam Smith and David Ricardo to further analyse the issues relating to population. The Introduction facilitates easy understanding of Malthus s hypotheses and serves as a curtain-raiser for the book. It will be highly useful to the students and teachers of economics, sociology and anthropology and researchers in these fields. It will immensely benefit policymakers and demographers. Common readers will also find it interesting and informative. Printed Pages: 200. Bookseller Inventory # 37247

Item Description: Vanni Scheiwiller, 2008. Milano, 2008; br., pp. 339, cm 13,5x20,5. (Idee). Item Description: Anagrama, 2015. Book Condition: New. Bookseller Inventory # 12121208

Item Description: Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Editore, 2013. Book Condition: new. Milano, 2013; br., pp. 248, cm 14,5x22. Item Description: Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1980. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. David Ricardo (18 April 1772 - 11 September 1823) was a political economist, often credited with systematizing economics, and was one of the most influential of the classical economists, along with Thomas Malthus and Adam Smith. He was also a member of Parliament, businessman, financier and speculator, who amassed a considerable personal fortune. Perhaps the most important of his contributions was the theory of comparative advantage, a fundamental argument in favor of free trade among countries and of specialization among individuals. Ricardo argued that there is mutual benefit from trade (or exchange) even if one party (e.g. resource-rich country, highly-skilled artisan) is more productive in every possible area than its trading counterpart (e.g. resource-poor country, unskilled laborer), as long as each concentrates on the activities where it has relative productivity advantage. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 033009

Item Description: Editorial Anagrama, España, 2015. Encuadernación de tapa blanda. Book Condition: Nuevo. Item Description: Ed. Piramide, 2006. soft. Book Condition: New. . . Item Description: EDICIONES TREA S.L. Book Condition: New. Item Description: LAP Lambert Acad. Publ. Dez 2010, 2010. Taschenbuch. Book Condition: Neu. 220x150x4 mm. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Neuware - The idea that free trade is a desirable factor for the economy originates all the way back in the 18th century: Adam Smith (1776) predicted that countries could grow if they would all specialize according to their absolute advantage and that all will gain from free trade. David Ricardo (1817, p. 88) opposed tariffs based on the argument that they generate inefficient usage of domestic resources; in his view, countries should specialize in goods for which they have a comparative productivity advantage. Recent studies have examined the relationship between openness and growth, with mixed results; some (e.g. Edwards, 1993) argued that trade openness promotes growth, while others (Rodriguez and Rodrik,2000)have criticised this idea with a series of arguments, such as the inappropriateness of variables used for expressing trade openness. In this thesis, we will examine the arguments of both sides, followed by our own empirical analysis. 60 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9783843386630
