Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Gail Samuelson (author photograph) (illustrator). Second printing [stated]. xx, [2], 602 pages. Illustrated endpapers. Genealogy. Illustrations. Notes. Index. Minor edge soiling noted. The first full account of the "American Brontës" focuses on Elizabeth, Mary, and Sophia Peabody--three sisters who were essential to American Romanticism as editors, writers, reformers, and ground-breaking thinkers. Megan Marshall (born June 8, 1954) is an American scholar, writer, and biographer. Her first biography The Peabody Sisters: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism (2005) earned her a place as a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. Her second biography Margaret Fuller: A New American Life is a richly detailed account of Margaret Fuller, the 19th-century author, journalist, and women's rights advocate. It won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. She worked on the book The Peabody Sisters for nearly 20 years, reading original letters and documents as well as delving into the newspapers and literature of the era. The book focused on the lives of Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Mary Tyler Peabody Mann, and Sophia Hawthorne. Her second biography is Margaret Fuller: A New American Life. Marshall spoke about the connection between the two biographies: "I wrote The Peabody Sisters partly to prove that the New England Transcendentalists included other brilliant women besides Fuller. Then I discovered that during the 20 years I'd spent researching the Peabodys, Fuller had been largely forgotten. No one recognized her name anymore. This was a shock to me, and a loss I wanted to repair." Derived from a Kirkus review: An incisive collective biography of Elizabeth, Mary and Sophia Peabodyâ "three Massachusetts sisters who helped spark educational reform and the American mid-19th-century literary renaissance. A historiographical revolution has occurred since the previous major biography of the trio, Louise Hall Tharp's The Peabody Sisters of Salem, notably in feminism and in greater candor about sexual matters. Using a vast cache of family letters and journals, Marshall masterfully analyzes how the three "both welcomed their group identity and resented it as they strove for independent self-fulfillment." Most startling, she depicts two triangular relationships, with Mary and Sophia succeeding in winning the affections of their eventual husbands (educator Horace Mann and Nathaniel Hawthorne, respectively) from Elizabeth. Above all, Marshall sets the sisters' hard-won achievements against the background of their family and time. The Peabodys followed their unconventional mother's lead into teachingâ "a necessity in a household with an underachieving father and three brothers. Elizabeth, the oldest, often intimidated not only her sisters but also many men with her precocious intellect. Author, translator, bookseller and publisher, she introduced the kindergarten movement to the United States. Mary, the family beauty, wrote a biography of Mann and even a posthumously published novel inspired by the love triangle with Elizabeth. Sophia, an invalid afflicted by migraines, blossomed into an accomplished painter and sculptor even as she drew out the shy Hawthorne. Marshall demonstrates how the sisters not only supported Hawthorne and Mann, but also Bronson Alcott, William Ellery Channing, Theodore Parker, Emerson and other Transcendentalists. A psychologically acute group portrait of a family that managed (in Elizabeth's words) "to move the mountain of custom and convention.".

As publishers, the Roberts Brothers (Austin J., John F. and Lewis A.) made their name in 1868 with the publication of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. They ran from 1876?1887 a "No Name Series" of novels and biographies attributed anonymously in a kind of social experiment, an idea attributed mostly to Thomas Niles, Jr. A Wikipedia entry about them asserts that "The Famous Women Series of the 1880s and 1890s consisted of biographies of Margaret Fuller, Jane Austen, Mary Wollstonecraft, George Eliot, and others," and most were written in fact by women and to great effect. Little, Brown bought the firm in 1898, but by then the Roberts brothers had published "Louisa May Alcott, Susan Coolidge, Emily Dickinson, Maud Howe Elliott, Louise Imogen Guiney, Julia Ward Howe, Helen Hunt Jackson, Abigail May Alcott Nieriker . . . Caroline Bauer, Mathilde Blind, Juliana Horatia Ewing, Anne Gilchrist . . . Jean Ingelow, Adelaide Ristori, A. Mary F. Robinson, George Sand, Charlotte Mary Younge, and Helen Zimmern," among many others (Wikipedia). Frontis matter + 4- 314 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
