Quoting the publisher: After the invention of photography, ethnologists, zoologists, etc., gradually ceased to illustrate their books with drawings, finding them more subject than photographs to inaccuracies and exaggerations. Because of this, beautiful albums of all kinds were no longer published. This volume of colored drawings depicting the costumes worn by certain Brazilian Indian tribes has another purpose: the creation of an original work of art based, nevertheless, on a reality confirmed by photography. This purpose has been fully accomplished by Noemia Mourão. . . Noemia has stylized her Indians slightly, but nowhere has she limited herself to drily recording the subject.
