Agrarian reforms in Iran and India: a tryst with modernity/Subodh Dhawan. "Browsing through the ages, one is convinced that the dialogue between India and Iran has been mutually beneficial. The Achaemenids developed an ingenious irrigation system in their satrapies situated in the North-Western India, for the benefit of the agriculture and also provided a fillip to the westerly commerce of this region by opening the trade routes. Artisans, scribes and artists from Persia sought refuge in India, gained patronage and enriched the Mauryan age. Gaining lessons from the political experiences and mistakes of the Achaemenids, the Mauryans formed a sturdy centralised administration in India. They organised a court culture heavily influenced by Persian traditions and etiquette. From the first christening of India as "Hindv" to the present day, Indo-Iranian contacts have been largely harmonious, complimentary and beneficial for the human heritage. May it be the development of language, grammar, script and the exposition in shape of poetry (shayari, ghazal, nazm, rubayi) and music (qawwali) or the expression in fine arts, calligraphy (nashtaliq, kufic), painting (Mughal miniatures), sculpture (Pillar capitals of Ashokan monoliths) and architecture (Kumrahar Palace to the Taj Mahal); or in the field of philosophy (Zoroastrian and Manichean), mysticism (Tassawuf) and thought (Sufism); or the disciplines of knowledge for human welfare like medicine, sciences, mathematics etc., the Indo-Iranian interaction remains a remarkable contribution to mankind. Indo-Iranian interaction encompasses many different facets e.g., political, social and economic interaction; art, architecture; religion, philosophy including Zoroastrianism and Sufism; literature, epic and poetry; language and calligraphy; life-styles and court culture etc. during all the periods of history, from ancient to the contemporary.". Consumer Movement started from the US and later spread to other European countries such as UK The Netherlands Norway Ireland Germany and France. Subsequently it spread to the Asian countries including Japan India and Malaysia. With the advent of competition in the market the movement gained momentum to emerge as a powerful weapon in the hands of consumers. Nevertheless consumers especially in the developing countries still need protection because they are disorganized and individually they have a very weak bargaining power. Many of them are illiterate ignorant and usually lack information to make intelligent purchases. Often they are not in a position to protect their interests while dealing with fully organized united and well informed professional sellers. Historically consumers in India remained as highly neglected and ill treated lots because markets for most essential products and services were sellers markets allowing the manufacturers and traders to keep their one up position vis a vis buyers. The plethora of Consumer Protection Laws has turned out to be a close preserve of the bureaucracy. The legal armory in this regard consists of about thirty laws meant for protecting the consumer directly or indirectly besides the statutory orders that can be enforced under the rule making power of the government at all levels. Yet the kind of protection the gullible consumer is in need of is illusive. This was precisely the reason which prompted us to organize a National Seminar on Consumer Movement in India Strategies for Peoples Involvement at the G.H. Patel Post graduate Institute of Business Management of the Sardar Patel University Vallabh Vidyanagar. The seminar was funded by the UGC under the Departmental Research Support (DRS) Scheme. The papers presented at the Seminar related to four themes 1. Consumer Rights Global v/s Indian Perspectives. 2. Violation of Consumer Rights and Remedial Measures under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). 3. Strategies for Creating Awareness and Peoples Involvement. 4. Other related issues (advertising ethics environment etc.). The book is a humble attempt to fill in the gap for good reference material on Consumer Movement in India and abroad. 224 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 66011

Book Description: New India Publishing Agency, 2012. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. . (illustrator). . Shivalik ranges cover an area of about 2.14 million ha in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana States of north-west India. Over exploitation of the resources in the region had lead to soil erosion resulting in the rise of riverbeds, siltation of tanks, reservoirs and other natural water bodies. Soil erosion greater than 80 t ha-1 yr-1 have been recorded from denuded hills at places. More than 70 per cent people of the region are dependent on agriculture, however, only 18 per cent of the cultivated area is irrigated. Agroforestry where tree and crops are integrated with each other had been recommended worldwide to check soil erosion and simultaneously achieve production goals. Adoption of scientifically proven agroforestry systems in Shivaliks can reverse the degradation and improve the economic status of the farmers of the region. Extensive research had been done till date on role of agroforestry in resource conservation and livelihood security in the region. The book is an attempt to compile the available knowledge on the subject. There are 20 chapters in the book covering various topics relating agroforestry systems with soil and water conservation, livelihood security, slope protection through mechanical and vegetative measures, fertility build up, mine spoil rehabilitation, bamboos, climate change and carbon sequestration.
