Consumer Movement started from the US and later spread to other European countries such as UK The Netherlands Norway Ireland Germany and France. Subsequently it spread to the Asian countries including Japan India and Malaysia. With the advent of competition in the market the movement gained momentum to emerge as a powerful weapon in the hands of consumers. Nevertheless consumers especially in the developing countries still need protection because they are disorganized and individually they have a very weak bargaining power. Many of them are illiterate ignorant and usually lack information to make intelligent purchases. Often they are not in a position to protect their interests while dealing with fully organized united and well informed professional sellers. Historically consumers in India remained as highly neglected and ill treated lots because markets for most essential products and services were sellers markets allowing the manufacturers and traders to keep their one up position vis a vis buyers. The plethora of Consumer Protection Laws has turned out to be a close preserve of the bureaucracy. The legal armory in this regard consists of about thirty laws meant for protecting the consumer directly or indirectly besides the statutory orders that can be enforced under the rule making power of the government at all levels. Yet the kind of protection the gullible consumer is in need of is illusive. This was precisely the reason which prompted us to organize a National Seminar on Consumer Movement in India Strategies for Peoples Involvement at the G.H. Patel Post graduate Institute of Business Management of the Sardar Patel University Vallabh Vidyanagar. The seminar was funded by the UGC under the Departmental Research Support (DRS) Scheme. The papers presented at the Seminar related to four themes 1. Consumer Rights Global v/s Indian Perspectives. 2. Violation of Consumer Rights and Remedial Measures under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). 3. Strategies for Creating Awareness and Peoples Involvement. 4. Other related issues (advertising ethics environment etc.). The book is a humble attempt to fill in the gap for good reference material on Consumer Movement in India and abroad. 224 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 66011

Shivalik ranges cover an area of about 2.14 million ha in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana States of north-west India. Over exploitation of the resources in the region had lead to soil erosion resulting in the rise of riverbeds, siltation of tanks, reservoirs and other natural water bodies. Soil erosion greater than 80 t ha-1 yr-1 have been recorded from denuded hills at places. More than 70 per cent people of the region are dependent on agriculture, however, only 18 per cent of the cultivated area is irrigated. Agroforestry where tree and crops are integrated with each other had been recommended worldwide to check soil erosion and simultaneously achieve production goals. Adoption of scientifically proven agroforestry systems in Shivaliks can reverse the degradation and improve the economic status of the farmers of the region. Extensive research had been done till date on role of agroforestry in resource conservation and livelihood security in the region. The book is an attempt to compile the available knowledge on the subject.
