Bookseller Inventory # 9781158759590

Excerpt: José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos, known as Zeca Afonso (Portuguese pronunciation: ) or just Zeca (2 August 1929 - 23 February 1987), was born in Aveiro, Portugal, the son of José Nepomuceno Afonso, a judge, and Maria das Dores. Zeca is among the most influential folk and political musicians in Portuguese history. He became an icon among Portuguese left-wing activists due to the role of his music in the resistance against the dictatorial regime of Oliveira Salazar, resistance that triumphed in 1974 with the pro-democratic leftist military coup of the Carnation Revolution. In the ensuing revolutionary process, Zeca was a very active musician and continued composing political and folk songs, often criticizing the post-revolutionary changes. Years after his death, Zeca Afonso is still widely listened to, not only in Portugal, but also abroad. José Afonso was born in Aveiro on 2 August 1929, at 10:30 am. In 1930 his parents travelled to Angola, a Portuguese colony at the time, where his father had been placed as a judge in the city of Silva Porto (present-day Kuito). José Afonso stayed at Aveiro, in a house named 'Fonte das Cinco Bicas', due to some health problems with his aunt Gigé and his uncle Xico, who called himself 'republican and anticlerical'. In 1933 Zeca travelled to Angola at his mother's request. On the ship Zeca met a missionary who became his companion during the voyage. José Afonso sta. 76 pp. Englisch. One of 500 copies. Large 8°, original printed wrappers. As new. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The title on the front cover reads @Inventário do Espólio de Ramalho Ortigão. José Duarte Ramalho Ortigão (1836-1915), an important author in his own right, was a close friend of Eça de Queiroz. A member of the Romantic school, Ramalho Ortigão was a literary critic with a sharp eye for manners and morals and a gift for describing them. He began his career as a journalist in 1859, publishing his first book in 1866. His style was influenced by Teófilo Braga and Eça de Queiroz. With the latter he collaborated on @O mysterio da estrada de Cintra, 1871, and founded @As farpas, in which the two satirized the foibles and follies of life in Lisbon. (After the first 15 issues, which appeared in 1872, the journal was written and published by Ramalho Ortigão alone for more than a decade.) Ramalho Ortigão is also known for his descriptions of his travels, such as @A Hollanda, 1883: "A vivid, witty and charming account of Holland, with malicious side-reflections on Portugal" (Bell, @Portuguese Literature p. 322). @Notas de viagem describes his trip to the 1878 World's Fair in Paris. ---- See Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura portuguesa (16th ed.) pp. 840-2, et passim; also Forjaz de Sampaio, @História da literatura portuguesa illustrada IV, 288-90; Ana Luísa Vilela in Machado, ed., @Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 352-5; Maria de Lourdes A.
