De um memorial, dirigido a Filippe IV em 1632, pelo actor Ortiz, se v que havia ento em Hespanha mais de quarenta companhias de comicos, e que estas companhias davam a somma de mil actores; e que se tinham edificado tantos theatros, que poucas cidades ou villas notaveis havia que no tivessem o seu. No anno, porm, de 1679, quando Carlos II casou com uma infanta de Frana, na festa do casamento, no foi possivel reunir mais de tres companhias para virem representar na crte. Neste periodo de decadencia e desprezo um unico escriptor trabalhou por amparar o vacillante theatro: Solis, o eloquente historiador da conquista do Mexico, dedicou tambem ao theatro a sua brilhante imaginao, polida agudeza, e vigoroso estilo. Deixou-nos varios dramas dignos do periodo a que sobreviveu; especialmente um delles que intitulou-Amor al uso, tem grandissimo merito.
