Editorial Reviews Amazon Review At this point, it doesn't really take a thick book to document what's bad about the National Rifle Association, so muckraker Anderson has given us this rather efficient thin one. Anderson, whose previous great gun-control achievement was lampooning Capitol security by pulling a pistol out of his pocket during a meeting with Bob Dole in the latter's Senate office, here uses NRA member mailings to capture the group's hysteria and quotes legal cases to show that its scorched-earth interpretation of the "right to bear arms" has never been recognized by any court, including the Supremes. Most useful is an appendix listing Senators and House members who have always voted against meaningful gun control alongside the sizable amounts of NRA donations they've received. Editorial Reviews From School Library Journal YA-- An authoritative study that also includes some of Cather's own comments about her writing. Divided into three segments entitled "The Short Fiction," "The Writer," and "The Critics," this collection of articles offers varied perceptions of Cather's little-noticed work. The first section analyzes such stories as "Paul's Case" and "The Garden Lodge," discussing the author's sense of irony. YAs eager to learn the writer's craft will find the middle section practical as they struggle to establish a persona. Students will appreciate Cather's views on the short story and its differences from the novel. Teachers will welcome the comprehensive consideration of the often underplayed efforts of this most American of authors. - Margaret D. Nolan, W. T. Not a remainder. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly A corporate takeover leads to a moral dilemma in this archly written but truncated posthumous novel from Coughlin (In the Presence of Enemies). The dilemma belongs to Judge Paul Murray, who unwittingly has received his recently acquired position on the federal bench thanks to his new wife, beautiful socialite Hope Scott. Hope asked powerful corporate raider and old boyfriend Jordan Crandell to recommend Paul for the judgeship; Crandell obliged. Now Crandell is in a headline-grabbing legal fight with takeover king Lew Valentine to buy up the computer company Starwares. As fate and plotting would have it, the Starwares case ends up in federal court, with Paul presiding. Coughlin devotes most of the novel to building up a world where amoral types like Crandell and Valentine will be judged by people who are flawed but essentially moral and upright, like Paul. But what the author offers is nearly all setup: instead of giving it the space and weight it deserves, Coughlin deals with Paul's moral dilemma?to rule on the case or to step down??in only a scant few pages. Perhaps Coughlin's death in 1992 is the reason behind this sketchy and unsatisfying climax; otherwise, the book is a sharply observed tale of self-interested sharks who tear away at each other during a corporate takeover. 75,000 first printing; $75,000 ad/promo. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Newly appointed federal judge Paul Murray's first case is a corporate takeover war that rivals in magnitude the QVC/Viacom battle for Paramount. It's a media circus and a potential legal nightmare-not to mention a feather in Murray's cap if he handles it well. As the mud flies, a young reporter for the Wall Street Journal quietly digs away, looking for the story of a lifetime while he courts a member of the defense team. Furthermore, Murray's new wife, heiress Hope Scott, is drawn into the case through her long-time friendship with one of the warring moguls and the evil deeds of her trust's executor. Threats to blackmail Murray and his wife make a mistrial a distinct possibility. Should he recuse himself from the case? Another solid legal thriller, this posthumous publication by the author of Shadow of a Doubt (St. Martin's, 1992) yields taut drama and great courtroom action. Fans of this popular genre will love it. Recommended for popular fiction collections. --Susan Clifford, Hughes Aircraft Co. Lib., Los Angeles Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. William Morrow & Co 1993 First Edition Stated NL with 1 New/Fine DJ Editorial Reviews From The fast-lane style that made Horse Latitudes overnight reading propels Ferrigno's new caper with equal speed. After public reaction to his newspaper column prompts a killer to be set free--with deadly results--Quinn (his only name) quits and joins the stylish gossip magazine SLAP , described as "attack journalism with a manicure. " Quinn and sexy photojournalist phenomenon Jen Takamura are covering a "Musclemen for Jesus" rally when he gets a frantic message from Andy, a buddy who hustles stolen high - tech hardware. Andy is on the run after witnessing the shooting of one of his customers, a sexual athlete who produced the TV show Straight Talk , hosted by the Oprah-ish Sissy Mizelle. Quinn gives the police Andy's story and a description of the killer, but they find Andy shot with the same gun, an apparent suicide, and close the case. Random clues make Quinn curious about Sissy and her singing-cowboy husband, John Stratton; when he and Jen get near Sissy's secret, the killer closes in. The characters--especially "Mr. Hollywood," a former colleague who gives Quinn all the Tinseltown dirt, and a villainous ex-pro football player who is addicted to the Home Shopping Network--are as offbeat as Carl Hiaasen's wounded zanies, and the ending is a perfect fadeout. BOMC and QPB alternates; author tour. 1992 The suspense begins when Quinn's friend Andy is found dead after revealing to Quinn that he has observed a murder. The victim is a TV producer who was trying to blackmail a well-known talk-show host. Quinn is a reporter working for a celebrity magazine, and soon he and photographer friend Jen find that they have become the hunted, as the murderer tries to eliminate all witnesses. Along the way, author Ferrigno ( Horse Latitudes , LJ 2/1/90) creates some very interesting characters, including a former actor turned politician and an aging Hollywood radio commentator. With a strong plot and plenty of action, Ferrigno has fashioned an enjoyable novel. Recommended for general fiction collections.- Marion F. Gallivan, Villa Maria Campus, Gannon Univ., Erie, Pa. 1993. Item Description: HarperOne, 2003. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine DJ. 1st edition, 6th printing. HarperOne 2003 1st edition, 6th printing New/Fine DJ Editorial Reviews ReviewBefore lay readers can grasp the significance of this book, they'll need a little historical reference. In the time of Jesus, the Jews of Jerusalem often buried their dead in tombs. After a year, when the flesh had disintegrated, it was customary to gather the bones and place them in a small limestone chest called an ossuary. Sometimes the name of the deceased would be inscribed onto the outside of the box. Flash forward to the spring of 2002 when Andre Lemaire, a specialist in ancient texts, was asked to read the Aramaic inscription on an ossuary that was owned by a collector in Israel. When Lemaire translated the inscription--"James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus"--he knew he had just stumbled upon an artifact in the same caliber as the lost Ark of the Covenant. Just as this artifact is now in safe hands, so is the amazing story of its discovery. Co-authors Hershel Shanks (The Mystery and Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls) and Ben Witherington III (The Jesus Quest) are esteemed scholars as well as riveting storytellers. They expertly recount the exciting moments of discovery and the darker moments of despair (at one point the ossuary is improperly ped and breaks into five pieces). They build a convincing case against its forgery and offer a flourishing finish in which they delve into the life of James, who was a linking force between the Jews and Christian of the first millennium, and could possibly continue that role into the second millennium. --Gail Hudson From Last October, biblical archaeologists stunned the world with news that a limestone ossuary with the inscription "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus" had surfaced in Palestine and may have once contained the bones of James, the early church leader and brother of Jesus of Nazareth. While it may seem a startling claim for the unassuming and unadorned 20-inch box, numerous scholars who have examined the ossuary now vouch for its first-century origins, if not its theological significance. Jews employed ossuaries for a relatively brief historical period (approximately 20 B.C. to A.D. 70), which fits with the textual evidence of James's martyrdom around A.D. 62. This is the first full-length treatment of the ossuary, and is written by a couple of big guns: Shanks is the editor of the Biblical Archaeology Review (which first broke the story), and Witherington is a seminary professor and author of a score of books on the Bible. Their collaboration is a well-argued and truly fascinating study of the ossuary and its importance. The opening chapters tell of the box's discovery and authentication, while the later chapters discuss its potential relevance and describe what is at stake if the ossuary is genuine. Particularly interesting is the book's discussion of what the ossuary does for Jewish-Christian relations: James, the bishop of Jerusalem, was known for encouraging Christians to retain aspects of their Jewish heritage instead of jettisoning that heritage as Paul had. This engaging invites readers to ponder the numerous questions and possibilities raised by the ossuary's discovery. 2003. Bookseller Inventory # 279392
