Item Description: Cosac & Naify,, São Paulo, 2005. 208 pages b/w and color plates, ports., facs., plans, elevations, draws., maps., cat., bios/chrons., chrt., bibl., color pict. wrps. 27cm ISBN: 8575034715. Richly illustrated edition that reviews 26 years of production by architects Fanucci (b. Brazil 1952) and Ferraz (b. Brazil 1956) as partners in the acclaimed Brasil Arquitetura Studio, based in São Paulo. With introductions by the Bahian architect João da Gama Filgueiras Lima (Lelé) and the Dutch professor Max Risselada and critical analysis by Cecilia Rodrigues dos Santos and Vasco Caldeira, it offers a broad picture of their production. Apart from their residential, industrial and public projects, the book reveals how Brasil Arquitetura Studio became a reference in restoration, renovation and intervention, mainly in buildings for cultural use, as museums, theatres and cultural centers. According to Cecilia Rodrigues, the guideline for the architects' work is a strong connection between history of architecture and Brazilian culture in its different moments and styles. Almost 15 years of living and working with the architect Lina Bo Bardi [1914- 1992] (in projects as SESC Pompéia and the Historical Center of Salvador) also left deep marks. Among other projects, the book mentions the Brazilian Afro Museum (Museu Afro Brasil), in Ibirapuera Park (São Paulo), the Rodin Museum, in Salvador, Conjunto KKK, and the revitalization of Gelbes Viertel (or Yellow District) in Berlin - winner of an international contest. Their furniture design and production, at the Baraúna Joinery, is also presented, 'Marcenaria Baraúna', a joinery of manufactured furniture designs they started with Marcelo Suzuki in 1986 as an extension of "Brasil Arquitectura. Bookseller Inventory # 79705

The former Railway Central Station in the historical downtown of São Paulo, a building built in 1914, and also known as Estação da Luz, was the main headquarters of the DEOPS since 1939, until its extinction in 1983. After numerous proposals of former political prisoners, families of the dead and missing, some human rights organizations and government bodies, the old building was transferred to the Ministry of Culture in 1998. The Pinacoteca do Estado developed the museological project for the "Memorial of Freedom", a name subsequently changed to "Resistance Memorial of Sao Paulo" when the former inmates contested that the use of the term "liberty" was associated with torture and deaths in the interior of the building. The museum was opened in January 24, 2009. The original project was developed in 2007 by noted museologists and historians, in partnership with educators from the Pinacoteca do Estado and was configured following six lines of action: Coleta Regular de Testemunhos and Lugares da Memória (communication and research activities), Centro de Referência, (safeguarding, documentation and conservation), Ação Educativa and Ação Cultural (educational and cultural activities) and Exposição (exhibitions and other promotional events). The present book celebrates the museum's first year of existence through multidisciplinary texts by those involved in its creation. Illustrated with a large amount of color photographs.
