Book Description: Contra Mundum Press, United States, 2014. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 203 x 127 mm. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. The Transformation Book, which belongs to Pessoa s pre-heteronymic period, contains a series of fragments written in English, Portuguese, and French, none of which were ever published during Pessoa s lifetime. Conceived by Pessoa in 1908, a year of great social and cultural transformation in Portugal, The Transformation Book was designed to reflect and advance social and cultural transformation in Portugal and beyond. Moving between a number of literary forms, including poetry, fiction, and satire as well as essays on politics, philosophy, and psychiatry, The Transformation Book marks one of the fundamental stages in Pessoa s elaboration of a new conception of literary space, one that he came to express as a drama in people. Alexander Search, Pantaleao, Jean Seul de Meluret, and Charles James Search are the four pre-heteronyms to which the texts of The Transformation Book are attributed. These four figures constitute a plural literary microcosm - a world that Pessoa makes, but that is occupied by a multiplicity of authors - and clearly anticipate the emergence of Pessoa s heteronyms. As the singular result of an intersection of Pessoa s personal intellectual trajectory with his hopes for fomenting cultural transformation, The Transformation Book makes for a unique contribution to Pessoa s ever-growing published oeuvre. Although some of the texts conceived as part of the Transformation Book have previously been published in isolation or as fragments, this is the first complete and critical edition of The Transformation Book, and most of the texts in this edition are published here for the first time. Through the critical efforts of Nuno Ribeiro and Claudia Souza, a fundamental project of Fernando Pessoa s is now brought from the confines of the archive to the public in its most complete and accurate fashion. The Transformation Book should contribute to future studies on the work of one of the most distinctive geniuses of modernist literature. Bookseller Inventory # AAV9781940625041

Book Description: Theclassics.Us, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 246 x 189 mm. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: .in sight of the coast. There is a chart in Hackluyt s Divers Voyages, made according to Verrazzani s plot, which last is praised for its accuracy by Hackluyt, but I cannot distinguish Cape Cod on it, unless it is the C. Arenas, which is in the right latitude, though ten degrees west of Claudia, which is thought to be Block Island. The Biographie Universelle informs us that an ancient manuscript chart drawn in 1529 by Diego Ribeiro, a Spanish cosmographer, has preserved the memory of the voyage of Gomez a Portuguese sent out by Charles the Fifth. One reads in it under (au dessous) the place occupied by the States of New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, Terre d Etienne Gomez, qu il decouvrit en 1525 (Land of Etienne Gomez, which he discovered in 1525). This chart, with a memoir, was published at Weimar in the last century. Jean Alphonse, Roberval s pilot in Canada in 1542, one of the most skillful navigators of his time, and who has given remarkably minute and accurate direction for sailing up the St. Lawrence, showing that he knows what he is talking about, says in his Routier (it is in Hackluyt), I have been at a bay as far as the forty-second degree, between Norimbegue the Penobscot? and Florida, but I have not explored the bottom of it, and I do not know whether it passes from one land to the other, i. e., to Asia. ( J ai ete a une Baye jusques par les 42e degres entre la Norimbegue et la Floride; mais je n en ai pas cherche le fond, et ne scais pas si elle passe d une terre a l autre. ) This may refer to Massachusetts Bay, if not possibly to the western inclination of the coast a little farther south.
