Item Description: J. S. Sanders & Company, Nashville, 1998. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Reprint Edition. 302 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition. ANIMALS. The court of Pope Leo X was famous for its excess, frivolity and impropriety. The pleasure-loving pontiff, son of Lorfnzo di Medici, is known to have kept a menagerie of wild birds and beasts, his favorite of which was Hanno, a young white Indian elephant brought to Rome as a gift from the King of Portugal. Hanno could kneel, dance, trumpet and weep on command. He promptly became the darling of the pope and populace, the star in processions and festivals (here described), and the subect of paintings, sculptures and fountains (here illustrated). No other beast has been so memorialized - the symbol of the Orient now so richly opened to the west. In this tour de force of original scholarship, Silvio Bedini gives us an elephant's-back view of early modern Europe unlike any we have seen before. Includes an Index. "An utterly charming and completely loopy story." - The Observer (Key Words: Pope Leo X, Elephants, Hanno, Silvio A. Bedini, Papal Staes, Rome, Renaissance Italy, Catholic Church, King Manuael I of Portugal, Woodcuts, Vaican, Basilica of Saint Peter, Giulio Romano, Rhinoceros, Menageries, Michelangelo Buonarroti, India, Pope Julius II, Florence, Paolo Govio, Churches, Tristao da Cunha, Apostolic Palace, Giacomo Baraballo, Animals). book. Excerpt: The 1961 Indian annexation of Goa (also referred to as Invasion of Goa, the Liberation of Goa and the Portuguese-Indian War), was an action by India's armed forces that ended Portuguese rule in its Indian enclaves in 1961. The armed action, codenamed Operation Vijay by the Indian government, involved air, sea and land strikes for over 36 hours, and was a decisive victory for India, ending 451 years of Portuguese colonial rule in Goa. Thirty-four Indians and thirty-one Portuguese were killed in the fighting. The brief conflict drew a mixture of worldwide praise and condemnation. In India, the action was seen as a liberation of historically Indian territory, while Portugal viewed it as an aggression against national soil. At the time of Union of India's independence from the British Empire in 1947, Portugal held a handful of enclaves on the Indian subcontinent - the districts of Goa, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli - collectively known as the Estado da Índia. Goa, Daman and Diu covered an area of around 1,540 square miles (4,000 km) and held a population of 637,591. The Goan diaspora was estimated at 175,000 (about 100,000 within the Indian Union). Religious distribution was 61% Hindu, 36.7% Christian (mostly Catholic), 2.2% Muslim. Economy was primarily based on agriculture, although the 1940s and 1950s saw a boom in mining - principally iron ore and some manganese. Resistance to Portuguese rule in Goa in the 20th century was pioneered by Tristao Braganza da Cunha, a French educated Goan engineer who founded the Goa Congress Committee in Portuguese India in 1928. Da Cunha released a booklet called 'Four hundred years of Foreign Rule', and a pamphlet, 'Denationalisation of Goa', intended to sensitize Goans to the oppression of Portuguese rule. Messages of solidarity were received by the Goa Congress Committee from leading figures in the Indian independence movement like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and several others. Excerpt: Pedro Álvares Cabral (Portuguese pronunciation: in European Portuguese or Portuguese pronunciation: in Brazilian Portuguese; c. 1467 or 1468 - c. 1520) was a Portuguese noble, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the discoverer of Brazil. Cabral conducted the first substantial exploration of the northeast coast of South America and claimed it for Portugal. While details of Cabral's early life are sketchy, it is known that he came from a minor noble family and received a good education. He was appointed to head an expedition to India in 1500, following Vasco da Gama's newly opened route around Africa. The object of the undertaking was to return with valuable spices and to establish trade relations in India-bypassing the monopoly on the spice trade then in the hands of Arab, Turkish and Italian merchants. His fleet of 13 ships sailed far into the western Atlantic Ocean, perhaps intentionally, where he made landfall on what he initially assumed to be a large island. As the new land was within the Portuguese sphere according to the Treaty of Tordesillas, Cabral claimed it for the Portuguese Crown. He explored the coast. 116 pp. Englisch. His fleet of 13 ships sailed far into the western Atlantic Ocean, perhaps intenti. 132 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781157674399

Christopher Columbus, latinisiert Columbus, eingedeutscht Kolumbus; \* 1451 ( ) in Genua; + 20. 144 pp. Deutsch. Excerpt: Mangalorean Catholics (Konkani: Kodialche Katholik) are an ethno-religious community of Roman Catholics and their descendants, from the Mangalore Diocese (erstwhile South Canara district) on the southwestern coast of India. They are an Konkani community and speak the Konkani language. Contemporary Mangalorean Catholics are descended mainly from Goan Catholic settlers who migrated to South Canara from Goa, a state north of Canara, between 1560 and 1763 throughout the course of the Goa Inquisition, Portuguese-Adil Shahi wars, and the Portuguese-Maratha wars. LII. [1752]. O sr.
