Can they remember? Doctor Patricio Gallardo begins to wonder when his son Gregorio abruptly cuts off their unusually close relationship. In the pages of this book, an intricate web of emotions gradually is unraveled over the course of two summers and through two essential characters: Doctor Gallardo and his grandson. With a delicate and intimate touch, Mercedes Salisachs traces a profoundly human story. Seeds of Silence (originally published in Spanish with the title El Secreto de las Flores) is one of the best novels from an author whose prolific literary career has garnered public acclaim and prestigious awards and earned her a place of honor in contemporary literature. MERCEDES SALISACHS: Born in Barcelona, Spain, Mercedes Salisachs is one of the most prominent contemporary Spanish writers. She has received numerous distinctions during her extensive literary career, including the prestigious Gran Cruz de la Orden Civil de Alfonso X el Sabio and the Premio Ciudad de Barcelona for her novel Una Mujer Llega al Pueblo, the premio Planeta, Spain s most lucrative award, for her novel, La Gangrena, the premio Ateneo de Sevilla for her novel El Volumen de la Ausencia and the premio Fernando Lara for her novel El Ultimo Laberinto. Item Description: Duke University Press Books, Durham and London, 2004. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. Firsrt Edition. 327 Pages Indexed. There are a dozen pages early in the book that have light pencil underlining and a few of the final pages including the back cover with small dog-ears at the top. Beyond this is a book with tight clean pages with no other marks or stamps. This book brings together ethnographic examinations of Amazonian assault sorcery, witchcraft, and injurious magic, or dark shamanism. Anthropological reflections on South American shamanism have tended to emphasize shamans healing powers and positive influence. This collection challenges that assumption by showing that dark shamans are, in many Amazonian cultures, quite different from shamanic healers and prophets. Assault sorcery, in particular, involves violence resulting in physical harm or even death. While highlighting the distinctiveness of such practices, the authors reveal them as no less relevant to the continuation of culture and society than curing and prophecy. The contributors suggest that the persistence of dark shamanism can be understood as a form of engagement with modernity. These essays, by leading anthropologists of South American shamanism, consider assault sorcery as it is practiced in parts of Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, and Peru. They analyze the social and political dynamics of witchcraft and sorcery and their relation to cosmology, mythology, ritual, and other forms of symbolic violence and aggression in each society studied. They also discuss the relations of witchcraft and sorcery to interethnic contact and the ways that shamanic power may be co-opted by the state. This book includes reflections on the ethical and practical implications of ethnographic investigation of violent cultural practices. Introduction: Dark Shamanism Neil L. Whitehead and Robin Wright, The Order of Dark Shamans among the Warao Johannes Wilbert, Dark Shamans and the Shamanic State: Sorcery and Witchcraft as Political Process in Guyana and the Venezuelan Amazon Silvia Vidal & Neil L. Item Description: Institute for the Study of the Americas, United Kingdom, 2005. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 224 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. This volume stresses the need for a comparative approach when dealing with the funding of party politics and a major related aspectcorruption. This topic lies at the heart of any realistic discussion of the logic of democratic representation. Corruption, or the perception of corruption, has led to an ever-increasing concern with political financing. In some cases the trend is toward a greater role for the state in financing political parties, in others the reverse is true. In this collection the individual experiences of several Latin American countries (including Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela) are examined against the background of Western Europe, with a view to identifying similarities as well as differences. Given the centrality of political parties to liberal democracies, this subject is of great significance. Contributors include Angel Alvarez (Universidad Central, Venezuela), Kevin Casas Zamora (University of Costa Rica), Fernando Cepeda Ulloa (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia), Pilar del Castillo (Spanish Minister of Education), Justin Fisher (University of Brunel), Manuel Antonio Garretn (University of Chile), Emilio Lama de Espinosa (Real Instituto Espaol Elcano de Relaciones Internacionales y Estratgicas, Madrid), Juan Molinar Horcasitas (Partido de Accin Nacional, Mexico), Michael Pinto-Duschinsky (University of Brunel), Wronique Pujas (University of Grenoble), Martin Rhodes (European University Institute, Florence), Diego Urbaneja (Universidad Central, Venezuela), and Laurence Whitehead (Nuffield College, University of Oxford). Item Description: Jorge Pinto Books, United States, 2008. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Derechos de Lacion ed. 229 x 152 mm. Language: Spanish Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.
